DAILY READINGS: Judges 17:1-18:31; Isaiah 36:1-37:7; 1 Corinthians 14:1-40

And Noah builded an altar unto the Lord; and took of every clean beast, and of every clean fowl, and offered burnt offerings on the altar. And the Lord smelled a sweet savour. Genesis 8:20-21

In Noah’s sacrifice we find a foreshadowing of the sacrifice of our Lord Jesus. Noah presented burnt offerings to the Lord. They were offerings of obedience and joy. So it was that our Saviour rejoiced to do His Father’s will even unto death. Noah’s sacrifice was accompanied by a new covenant with God. The sacrificial death of Christ also ushered in a new covenant between God and man—a covenant of grace based on a sacrifice that was sufficient in every way. —Vernon Markle

No blood, no altar now, the sacrifice is o’er;
But richer blood has flowed from nobler veins,
To purge the soul from guilt, and cleanse the reddest stains. —H. Bonar
