DAILY READINGS: 2 Samuel 12:1-31; Habakkuk 3:1-19; Romans 16:1-27

Take heed that ye do not your alms before men, to be seen of them: otherwise ye have no reward of your Father which is in heaven… That thine alms may be in secret: and thy Father which seeth in secret himself shall reward thee openly. Matthew 6:1, 4

What a sobering thought, that our desire for man’s approval of our charitable deeds may in effect rob us of our heavenly reward. Of how much more lasting value is our heavenly Father’s “well done” of those things done in secret. May we seek this rather than the fleeting praise of man’s recognition. —E. V.

We give Thee but Thine own, what e’er the gift may be;
All that we have is Thine alone, a trust, O Lord, from Thee. —William W. How
