DAILY?READINGS: 2 Kings 3; Jeremiah 36; Hebrews 8

For ye were as sheep going astray; but are now returned unto the Shepherd and Bishop of your souls. 1 Peter 2:25

In the mountains of Spain a shepherd’s flock grazed in the field beside the road. He never took his eyes off the sheep while we talked. Some strayed near the roadside. First he called to them. They paused; looked up. They recognized his voice but kept moving toward the road. Next, he threw a stone beyond them in warning. They jumped but did not return. Finally, he sent his dog to move them back to the field. I wonder if we are not often like those sheep. We hear, even pause, but keep going toward danger. Is He speaking to you? Heed the Shepherd’s voice and avoid more drastic measures. —Carl Knott

Perverse and foolish oft I strayed, but yet in love He sought me,
And on His shoulder gently laid, and home rejoicing brought me. —Baker
