DAILY READINGS: Gen. 40; Psalm 18:1-29; Matt. 23

If in the land of peace, wherein thou trustedst, they wearied thee, then how wilt thou do in the swelling of Jordan? Jeremiah 12:5b

Entering the Jordan is a picture of entering death. Men enter different ways. Voltaire cried out desperately, “I am abandoned by God and man! I will give you half of what I am worth if you will give me six months’ life. Then I shall go to hell; and you will go with me. O Christ! O Jesus Christ!” The nurse that attended him exclaimed, “For all the wealth in Europe I would not see another infidel die.” As Stephen was martyred he calmly said, “Lord Jesus, receive my spirit.” How will you enter? —R. Surgenor

Will your anchor hold in the floods of death?
When the waters cold chill your latest breath?
On the rising tide you can never fail,
While your anchor holds within the veil. —Priscilla J. Owens
