DAILY READINGS: Joshua 23; Isaiah 17-18; 2 Thessalonians 2

And there shall in no wise enter into it any thing that defileth, neither whatsoever worketh abomination, or maketh a lie: but they which are written in the Lamb’s book of life. Revelation 21:27

I run a programme at a local college. Before each class I write the names of those who attend in a book. At the end of term I cook a meal for all my students. Some times though, someone will come to the door and state that they were in my class. I simply open the book and check if their name is on the page. If it is not, there is no entrance. A far greater entrance looms for all of us. God's book lists those who will enter heaven. Is your name written in the Book of Life?—J. Fleming

Book of life! When we departing, bid farewell to friends we love,
Give us, for the life then closing, life, life above. —T. MacKellar

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 22; Isaiah 15-16; 2 Thessalonians 1

All the days of the vow of his separation there shall no razor come upon his head: until the days be fulfilled, in the which he separateth himself unto the LORD, he shall be holy, and shall let the locks of the hair of his head grow. Numbers 6:5

The Nazarite was manifestly different in the sight of men. Should not a Christian be different in the eyes of the ungodly? We are ambassadors of Christ, children of God, joint-heirs with Christ, possessors of unsearchable riches. Our kingdom is not of this world and our inheritance is in heaven. We should not just be different, we should be vastly different. Worldliness and immodesty are absent. Flamboyance is not seen. Such behaviour brings ridicule from the ungodly. Let it not be said of us. —R. Surgenor

Heirs of God, joint-heirs with Jesus, long ere time its race began;
To His name eternal praises, O what wonders love hath done!—John Kent

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 20-21; Isaiah 14; 1 Thessalonians 5

For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, they are the sons of God. Romans 8:14

To be led by the Spirit of God demands a willing obedience and surrender to Him. It is not a forced march! The Holy Spirit expresses Christ’s call within us and it is as real today as the day when it was uttered, "If any man will come after me ,let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me," (Luke 9:23). Being led and following are the voluntary acts of an obedient disciple. He leads us from ourselves to Himself and from our will to His will. Will you follow?—Drew Craig

Have Thine own way Lord, have Thine own way,
Hold o’er my being absolute sway!
Fill with Thy Spirit, till all shall be,
Christ only, always, living in me. —G. C. Stebbins

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 18-19; Isaiah 13; 1 Thessalonians 4

For ye know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that, though He was rich, yet for your sakes He became poor, that ye through his poverty might be rich. 2 Corinthians 8:9

Reflect upon the three word phrases in this text: “Lord Jesus Christ.” His names and titles testify to His supremacy. “He was rich.” All the wealth of Deity is His eternally. “He became poor.” Bethlehem, Nazareth and Calvary are land-marks in His journey of voluntary humiliation. “For your sakes.” What an amazing climax to a tremendous story!—George Hall

And can it be that I should gain an interest in the Saviour’s blood?
Amazing love! How can it be, that Thou, my God, shouldest die for me?—Charles Wesley

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 16-17; Isaiah 11-12; 1 Thess. 2:13 to 3:13

But we speak the wisdom of God in a mystery, even the hidden wisdom, which God ordained before the world unto our glory. 1 Corinthians 2:7

When people in the world are antagonistic or indifferent to our contemplation of Christ, we must not be surprised. They just do not understand. The hidden mysteries of God cannot be understood by those whom the Lord has not yet illuminated by His gracious Spirit. Let us  steadfastly and with prayer maintain our testimony and worship. And may we always treasure God’s precious thoughts to us in His Son!—Mark Fenn

And is it so! I shall be like Thy Son?
Is this the grace which He for me has won?
Father of glory—thought beyond all thought!
In glory, to His own blest likeness brought! —J. N. Darby

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 14-15; Isaiah 10:5-34; 1 Thess. 1 to 2:12

Consider now from this day and upward, from the four and twentieth day of the ninth month, even from the day that the foundation of the LORD’S temple was laid… from this day will I bless you. Haggai 2:18-19

God's people had done well in rebuilding the temple. In light of this, God made a promise to His people that the barrenness they had been experiencing would be reversed. He even marked the date it would occur—the twenty fourth day of the ninth month. This can be our experience too. Perhaps we have neglected the claims of God on our lives. If we again rededicate our lives, our all, to Him, from that very day, we can expect to see blessing come down upon us from above. —W. H. Burnett

All to Jesus, I surrender; Lord, I give myself to Thee;
Fill me with Thy love and power; let Thy blessing fall on me.—Judson W. VanDeventer

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 13; Isaiah 9:8 to 10:4; Luke 24:36-53

Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it doth not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like him; for we shall see him as He is. And every man that hath this hope in him purifieth himself, even as He is pure. 1 John 3:2-3

In a world that is hopeless we have this purifying hope. It is to be with Him forever. It is called a blessed and living hope. This I can grasp quite well. But there is more in these verses, “ We shall be like Him.” We who are so carnal and selfish; we that sin in thought, word and deed, are going to be like Him? Only God and the power of the Gospel of His grace could ever accomplish this. All praise to Him!—Harold G. Smith

O happy day that fixed my choice on Thee, my Saviour and my God!
Well may this glowing heart rejoice, and tell its raptures all abroad.—Edward Rimmault

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 11-12; Isaiah 8:5 to 9:7; Luke 24:13-35

And the angel which I saw stand upon the sea and upon the earth lifted up his hand to heaven, And sware by him that liveth for ever and ever…that there should be time no longer. Revelation 10:5-6

What an awesome scene. A mighty angel stands on land and sea and lifts his voice. With his declaration, time ends and then eternity! This day is coming and it may be quite near. How terrible shall be the end of those who do not accept the invitation of the Lord Jesus while there is yet time. Come to the Saviour today. "Behold, now is the accepted time; behold now is the day of Salvation," (2 Cor. 6:2). —E. MacLelland

And oh, what a weeping and wailing
As the lost were told of their fate;
They cried for the rocks and the mountains,
They prayed, but their prayer was too late! —Bert Shadduck

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 10; Isaiah 7 to 8:4; Luke 23:47 to 24:12

John answered them, saying, I baptize with water: but there standeth one among you, whom ye know not. John 1:26

Ye worship ye know not what: we know what we worship: for salvation is of the Jews. John 4:22

For as I passed by, and beheld your devotions, I found an altar with this inscription, TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Acts 17:23a

Every instance of witnessing has its own issues. With those sent by the Pharisees, it was pride and trust in man-made tradition; with the woman it was a religious facade disguising her shameful sin; with the Athenians, it was meaningless, pretentious debate. Christ and His Gospel is the answer to all of these issues. We need to declare Him fully and faithfully. —Mark Kolchin

We’ve a message to give to the nations, that the Lord who reigns up above,
Has sent us His Son to save us, and show us that God is love. —H. Nichol

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 9; Isaiah 6; Luke 23:13-46

For I also am a man set under authority, having under me soldiers, and I say unto one, Go, and he goeth; and to another, Come, and he cometh; and to my servant, Do this, and he doeth it. Luke 7:8

It was an awkward situation for the Jewish leaders; they didn’t believe in Jesus Christ, yet the centurion who had been kind to them requested them to ask Jesus to heal his ill servant. The centurion’s humility was evident; he did not ask Christ to come to his gentile home. His knowledge of authority and responsibility was also commendable. What is the lesson for us? We too must be under God ordained authority to honour God and serve others in His name. The only other system of authority is satanic and the believer cannot honour God while under Satan’s rule. —Warren Henderson

My gracious Master and my God, assist me to proclaim,
To spread through all the earth abroad, the honours of Thy name.—Charles Wesley
