DAILY READINGS: Ruth 1; Isaiah 41; 2 Corinthians 1

Whom have I in heaven but Thee? And there is none upon earth that I desire but Thee. Psalm 73:25

Thoughts of heaven make us think of being with our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. He will be the centre of our focus for all eternity. But why should that attitude and adoration be put off to a coming day? As we live here and now, is the Lord Jesus truly all that we desire? Or are we caught up with earthly desires and pleasures? May He be our all in all now, as He will be then. —L. Tempest

And when I think, that God, His Son not sparing;
Sent Him to die, I scarce can take it in;
That on the Cross, my burden gladly bearing,
He bled and died to take away my sin. —Carl Boberg

DAILY READINGS: Judges 21; Isaiah 40; 1 Corinthians 16

And it shall come to pass, when your children shall say unto you, What mean ye by this service? That ye shall say, It [is] the sacrifice of the LORD’S passover, who passed over the houses of the children of Israel in Egypt, when He smote the Egyptians, and delivered our houses. And the people bowed the head and worshipped. Exodus 12:26-27

God did not want His people to forget this miraculous deliverance, and so the Passover memorial was instituted. The Lord’s Supper is the same. We were not there at Calvary but we must never forget it. “Blessed are they that have not seen, and yet have believed". Let us bow and worship today. —Edwin Fesche

We soon shall join the white robed throng, we soon shall walk by sight;
Till then, by faith we raise the song, by faith in Thee delight.—Anon.

DAILY READINGS: Judges 20; Isaiah 38-39; 1 Corinthians 15:35-58

But God raised Him from the dead. Acts 13:30

By an act of God, our Saviour arose from the dead, and lives eternally. He is the only spiritual leader in human history who was once dead and now lives. Many bore witness of His resurrection. He will never die. Every human being—past, present, future—has an inescapable appointment with the living Christ. For many, that appointment is a happy prospect. For all others, it bodes an awful doom. Prepare now to meet the risen Saviour. —Doug Kazen

He lives; He lives: Christ Jesus lives today.
He walks with me; He talks with me, along life’s narrow way.
He lives; He lives; salvation to impart.
You ask me how I know He lives; He lives within my heart. —A. Ackley

DAILY READINGS: Judges 19; Isaiah 37:8-38; 1 Corinthians 15:1-34

Then said David to the Philistine, Thou comest to me with a sword, and with a spear, and with a shield: but I come to thee in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom thou hast defied. 1 Samuel 17:45

All that the world can bring against me, to cause me anxiety, to rob me of my joy, and to spoil my testimony are as nothing compared to the One whose thoughts toward me are innumerable. I wake up each day with the Lord of hosts on my side. He stands ready for every one of my battles. But I must choose to let Him do the fighting. Each temptation or anxious thought must be cast upon Him. Trust Him to take up the battle. He will give the victory. —B. Crawford

I take the life of victory, not I, but Christ Himself in me;
He conquers now, He sets me free; I take, He gives—the victory. —P. Rader

DAILY READINGS: Judges 17-18; Isaiah 36 to 37:7; 1 Corinthians 14

O God, thou hast taught me from my youth: and hitherto have I declared Thy wondrous works. Now also when I am old and grayheaded, O God, forsake me not; until I have shewed Thy strength unto this generation, and Thy power to every one that is to come. Psalms 71:17-18

The Psalmist was so well educated by God in his youth that he continued to declare His wondrous works throughout his years. Later when he realized that age was catching up with him and his strength fading, he determined still to show forth God’s power to everyone he came in contact with. No matter what age we are, do we have such a determined goal in our life for God? —K. C. Ung

Until the race is run, until the journey’s done,

DAILY READINGS: Judges 16; Isaiah 35; 1 Corinthians 13

Blessed are ye, when men shall revile you, and persecute you, and shall say all manner of evil against you falsely, for My sake. Matthew 5:11

In a graveyard in the Parish Church of Cupar in Scotland is a headstone which says “Here lies interred the heads of Laurance Hay and Andrew Pitulloch who suffered martyrdom at Edinburgh for adhering to the word of God.” Many of us may have had little experience of real suffering because of our faith in Christ. Let us remember the many today who do suffer for being a Christian. —Brian Powlesland

O how sweet is this assurance ‘midst the conflict and the strife;
Although sorrows past endurance, follow me through life.
Home in prospect still can cheer me, yes and give me sweet repose,
While I feel His presence near me: for my Father knows.—Anon.

DAILY READINGS: Judges 14-15; Isaiah 34; 1 Corinthians 12

After that He put his hands again upon his eyes, and made him look up: and he was restored, and saw every man clearly. Mark 8:25

Why wasn’t this blind man healed completely the first time Jesus laid His hands on him? Perhaps it is to emphasize the progression of the Christian life. Our knowledge of Him constantly progresses and grows. Then there is the progression of following Him, learning just how far His followers have to go: “Whosoever will come after Me, let him deny himself, take up his cross, and follow me.” So the illustration of the blind man’s progression represents each of us. Do we see any progression in our lives for Christ? —Tom Steere

We thank Thee for the smile and frown, and for the gain and loss;
We bless thee for the future crown, and for the present cross.—J. Crewdson

DAILY READINGS: Judges 13; Isaiah 33; 1 Corinthians 11:2-34

And he said unto his brethren, My money is restored; and, lo, it is even in my sack: and their heart failed them, and they were afraid, saying one to another, What is this that God hath done unto us? Genesis 42:28

When they saw their money returned, Joseph’s brothers were stricken by their consciences. We don’t need to ask God to awaken our sinner friends by bringing calamity into their lives. The “goodness of God” leads to repentance (Rom. 2:4). Show them the love of God! Look for an opportunity to clearly explain the Gospel to them, and while you continue in prayer, leave the Holy Spirit to convict them of their sin. —David Croudace

Speak just a word for Jesus, tell of His love for men!
Someone distressed will listen, willing to trust Him then. —K. O. Barker

DAILY READINGS: Judges 11:29 to 12:15; Isaiah 32; 1 Cor. 10:14 to 11:1

And Naomi had a kinsman of her husband’s, a mighty man of wealth, of the family of Elimelech; and his name was Boaz. Ruth 2:1

The kinsman redeemer was God’s gracious provision for an Israelite to regain an inheritance, lost through neglect or misfortune. The Christian can’t lose his salvation, but he can lose his “spiritual blessings” by neglect or by having them snatched away, unaware, by the world or Satan. Our Lord Jesus Christ is our Kinsman Redeemer, interceding on our behalf, to restore our lost blessings, on the basis of His redemptive work at Calvary. Now we have the right to be heard, the right to confess, the right to be forgiven and restored (1 John 1:5-10). O let us worship our mighty Redeemer today. —Milton Haack

Thou dear Redeemer, dying Lamb, I love to hear of Thee;
No music like Thy charming name, is half so sweet to me. —J. Cennick

DAILY READINGS: Judges 10:6 to 11:28; Isaiah 31; 1 Cor. 9:24 to 10:13

So then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God. Romans 10:17

My daughter was in a car crash that nearly took her life. When we walked into the room where she lay, a nurse told me to hold her hand and to talk to her. “She’s in a coma but can hear you, it’s the last sense to go,” she said. I didn’t know if Melissa had ever put her faith in the Lord Jesus so I held her hand, leaned close to her ear and whispered the power of salvation to her. Knowing she could still hear gave me hope. How gracious is the Lord. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the word of God. Have you listened in faith? —Jerry Proctor

His word shall not fail you He promised, believe Him and all will be well:
Then go to a world that is dying, His perfect salvation to tell! —H. Lemmel
