2 Kings 5:1-27; Jeremiah 38:1-28; Hebrews 9:15-28

And Peter followed afar off. Luke 22:54
And Peter stood with them, and warmed himself. John 18:18
Peter sat down among them. Luke 22:55
But he denied before them all. Matthew 26:70
Again he denied with an oath. Matthew 26:72
And about the space of one hour after another confidently affirmed, saying, Of a truth this fellow also was with him. Luke 22:59

What a solemn warning this sequence of verses send! It took no time at all for Peter to be following the Lord from afar off, to sitting at length with His enemies. How easy for us when we do not guard our associations, actions or words to slip into behaviour that can cause us to backslide or even deny our Lord. —K. J. W.

2 Kings 4:1-44; Jeremiah 37:1-21; Hebrews 9:1-14

The bush burned with fire, and the bush was not consumed.  Exodus 3:2

At 80, Moses began his greatest ministry after the fire went out. Interestingly, he did not stay and pray or build an altar to commemorate this exciting event, nor did he break off branches to bring them home and worship them. He immediately obeyed the voice of the Lord. The first 40 years of his life he learned to be somebody, then for the next 40 years, he learned to be nobody, now at 80, he had lost all self confidence, and was ready to rely wholly on the Lord for the next 40 years. The words of the Lord, “Certainly I will be with thee” (Ex. 3:12), gave him the confidence to keep moving forward. —Eleanor Isaacson

Now I’m resting, sweetly resting, in the cleft once made for me;
Jesus, blessed Rock of Ages, I will hide myself in Thee. —M. James

2 Kings 3:1-27; Jeremiah 36:1-32; Hebrews 8:1-13

And he said, I beseech thee, shew me thy glory. Exodus 33:18

Moses, a man who met God at a burning bush; a man who performed miracles by God’s power; a man who watched God part the Red Sea; a man who regularly spoke with God, was a man who desired more of God. You would think he had seen enough! But signs and wonders won’t satisfy the heart that longs for God Himself. Moses wanted more of God, knowing that his own strength and power were inadequate for the task at hand. So it is for us. We need more of God each step of our journey. Lord, show us Your glory today! —Deborah Manera

As long as we are satisfied with the status quo,
we will never come to the point where,
we truly experience God as He desires to be experienced.  —A. W. Tozer

2 Kings 2:1-25; Jeremiah 35:1-19; Hebrews 7:1-28

I have manifested thy name unto the men which thou gavest me out of the world: thine they were, and thou gavest them me. John 17:6
But [you were redeemed] with the precious blood of Christ. 1 Peter 1:19

Our Saviour died for the sins of the whole world. In that sense He made salvation and forgiveness available to “whosoever will”. But that salvation became ours when we trusted Him and made His forgiving work our own. When we received everlasting life, God separated us out of the world and we entered the flock of the Great Shepherd. What a privilege for us to praise and worship Him today for all His wonderful work for us. —Ken Gross

2 Kings 1:1-18; Jeremiah 34:1-22; Hebrews 5:11-6:20

But let not the priests and the people break through to come up unto the Lord, lest he break forth upon them. Exodus 19:24
An altar of earth thou shalt make unto me, and shalt sacrifice…I will come unto thee, and I will bless thee. Exodus 20:24

Under the law there is no possible way of access to God. Yet on the grounds of sacrifice, the place of grace, God desires to meet man. “I will come…and…bless thee.” These are words flowing from the very heart of God, words expressing the very nature and character of God. Meet God on His terms, meet at the cross, and know the blessing of forgiveness and eternal life. —Pete Smith

Wondrous was Thy love in giving,
Jesus for our sins to die;
Wondrous was His grace in leaving,
For our sakes, His home on high. —S. P. Tregelles

1 Kings 22:1-53; Jeremiah 33:1-26; Hebrews 4:14-5:10

Righteousness will go before Him, and shall make His footsteps our pathway. Psalm 85:13, NKJV

If you are walking in deep snow it is helpful to have someone ahead of you breaking a trail. According to this verse, righteousness goes before our God. He is our righteousness (1 Cor. 1:30, 1 Peter 2:24). He is “breaking a trail” for us with His completed work on the cross. Let Him go before you today and make His footsteps your pathway. —Annette Baal

1 Kings 21:1-29; Jeremiah 32:26-44; Hebrews 4:1-13

Be still, and know that I am God: I will be exalted among the heathen, I will be exalted in the earth. Psalm 46:10

Psalm 46 speaks of natural crises, “Though the mountains be carried into the midst of the sea” (v. 2) and national crises, “The heathen raged, the kingdoms were moved” (v. 6). Today we face similar turmoil. The world is filled with fear, and distress and rightly so. Listen to David’s solution: “Be still, and know that I am God”. In the midst of this turmoil we can stop and find comfort that our God is in total control. Then He says “I will be exalted among the
heathen”. How thankful we should be that we know how it is all going to end. Our God will reign forever and ever. May we find comfort in this today. —Paul Robertson

1 Kings 20:1-43; Jeremiah 32:1-25; Hebrews 3:1-19

From the end of the earth I will cry to You, When my heart is overwhelmed; Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.  Psalm 61:2, NKJV

There are times in all our lives when the circumstances of life come over us like a dark cover! Actually that was the original meaning of the word “overwhelmed”. When David was deeply troubled he determined that from wherever his circumstances, he wanted to be led to the Rock that is higher than he—higher, stronger, well able and wanting to help him. David’s God is your Lord and Saviour too. Go to Him! —Ray Jones

Oh, safe to the Rock that is higher than I,
My soul in its conflicts and sorrows would fly,
So sinful, so weary, Thine, Thine would I be,
Thou blest Rock of Ages, I’m hiding in Thee. —William O. Cushing

1 Kings 19:1-21; Jeremiah 31:1-40; Hebrews 2:1-18

The words of Jeremiah the son of Hilkiah, of the priests. Jeremiah 1:1
I ordained thee a prophet unto the nations. Jeremiah 1:5

Jeremiah grew up knowing that he was of the priestly family and destined to serve in the House of God. What he didn’t know, until God called him, was that he was also destined to be a prophet. He was a priest, familiar with the presence of God, before he was called to prophesy for God. The order is significant. Before we can adequately speak for God we need to be familiar with the sanctuary, enjoying His presence before going forth to represent Him to others. —Philip A. Kaye

O teach me, Lord, that I may teach,
The precious things Thou dost impart.  —Frances R. Havergal

1 Kings 18:1-46; Jeremiah 30:1-24; Hebrews 1:1-14

Artaxerxes, king of kings, unto Ezra the priest, a scribe of the law of the God of heaven, perfect peace, and at such a time. Ezra 7:12

“Peace, and at such a time”—surely needful in these days of tumult and confusion. Once the individual has peace with God, he is able to enjoy the peace of God protecting both his heart (affections) and mind (thought life) in spite of the dramatic failures of the culture around him. —Wm. H. Gustafson

While I hear life’s rugged billows,
Peace, peace is mine!
Why suspend my harp on willows,
Peace, peace is mine!  —J. Denham Smith
