DAILY READINGS: Joshua 1; Hosea 8-9; Luke 19:29-48

I will praise the name of God with a song, and will magnify Him with thanksgiving. This also shall please the LORD better than an ox or bullock that hath horns and hoofs. Psalms 69:30-31

The ox is known for strength and hard labour. Thus a symbol of our service to God. The bullock for sacrifice—our gifts to Him. But more pleasing to God is a song of praise and thanksgiving from our heart to His holy name. —E. MacLelland

Praise the Saviour, O my soul!
He has drunk the bitter gall.
Paid the ransom, set thee free;
Praise Him, praise Him cheerfully. —Anon.

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 34; Hosea 6:4 to 7:16; Luke 19:1-28

And it was so, when the days of their feasting were gone about, that Job sent and sanctified them, and rose up early in the morning, and offered burnt offerings according to the number of them all: for Job said, It may be that my sons have sinned, and cursed God in their hearts. Thus did Job continually. Job 1:5

Fathers, you are the patriarchal leader of your family, and you need to act as a priest on your children’s behalf, praying for them daily and living Christ before them. May God give you the wisdom to be the father God would have you to be. —Jim Comte

O give us homes where Christ is Lord and Master,
The Bible read, the precious hymns still sung;
Where prayer comes first in peace or in disaster,
And praise is natural speech to every tongue. —Barbara B. Hart

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 33; Hosea 4 to 6:3; Luke 18:15-43

The fear of the LORD is to hate evil: pride, and arrogancy, and the evil way, and the froward mouth, do I hate. Proverbs 8:13

“The fear of the Lord is the beginning of knowledge” (Prov. 1:7). It is fear of God that causes sinners to humble themselves and receive His solution for sin—the Lord Jesus. How can you identify those who truly fear the Lord? They shun evil and pursue righteousness. They exhibit a spirit of humility. They learn to hate the things that God loathes. There are no degrees of holiness with God. He hates all that opposes His character. May believers adopt this mindset and make no excuses for engaging in what God hates. —Warren Henderson

Take time to be holy, be calm in thy soul,
Each thought and each motive, beneath God’s control. —W. Longstaff

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 32:15-52; Hosea 2 to 3 ; Luke 17:20 to 18:14

Therefore I say unto you, Take no thought for your life, what ye shall eat, or what ye shall drink; nor yet for your body, what ye shall put on. Is not the life more than meat, and the body than raiment? Matthew 6:25

The Christian life is divinely designed to operate by daily dependence on God. “We walk by faith, not by sight” is the believer’s motto (2 Cor. 5:7). Sometimes the impression is given that only missionaries or those in “full time” ministry live by faith. This could not be further from the truth. All Christians are called to look to the Lord for the provision of all of their needs—spiritual, emotional, and physical. Do not miss the blessing of being fed by His hand today! —Keith Keyser

Since ’tis the Lord’s command, my mouth I open wide;
Lord, open Thou Thy bounteous hand, that I may be supplied. —J. Newton

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 31:14 to 32:14; Hosea 1; Luke 17:1-19

So he sent his brethren away, and they departed: and he said unto them, See that ye fall not out by the way. Genesis 45:24

Joseph, called Zaphnath-Panneah, or “Saviour of the world”, kissed each of his brothers and bade them good-bye. With wagons loaded with provision, they journeyed home. Joseph’s final words were, “See that ye fall not out by the way”. In other words, “Don’t quarrel as you journey back”. How could they disagree, having enjoyed their saviour’s forgiveness and parting kiss? It was good advice for brethren of Joseph’s day and ours. We have been blessed with provisions for our trip heavenward. It is His desire that we love each other on our journey to our Heavenly Father. — Arnot McIntee

We share our mutual woes, our mutual burdens bear;
And often for each other flows, the sympathizing tear. —John Fawcett

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 30 to 31:13; Amos 9; Luke 16

And the priests…and all the Israelites passed over on dry ground, until all the people were passed clean over Jordan. Joshua 3:17

After 40 years in the wilderness the people arrived at the Jordan in flood season. Could there have been a worse time to cross? The Lord told them to wait by the banks for three days—perhaps to assess the situation and to unanimously agree that crossing was humanly impossible. Are you facing an impossible situation? Perhaps, as with the Israelites, the God of the impossible is now ready to “do wonders among you.” —M. MacMullen

Got any rivers you think are uncrossable?
Got any mountains you can’t tunnel through?
God specializes in things thought impossible;
And does the things that others cannot do. —Oscar C. Eliason

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 29; Amos 7-8; Luke 15:11-32

Then when lust hath conceived, it bringeth forth sin: and sin, when it is finished, bringeth forth death. James 1:15

I found a tiny sea snail crawling along in the mud. On its back was an oyster that had already grown to the size of the snail. As I looked at that oyster which would soon be bigger than the snail and would eventually destroy it, it reminded me of sin’s awful work. In the same way, it gets a hold on us, grows and can ruin us. So be careful what you watch, what you read, what you do. These things can spoil our Christian testimony and our walk with the Lord. —J. Fleming

It was my sin that Jesus bore upon the cross that day,
And when I trusted Him I know, my sins were washed away.
So help me Lord to live each hour, a life that’s clean and true,
So others too may find that life, that I have found in You. —J. F.

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 28:38-68; Amos 5-6; Luke 14:25 to 15:10

His hands full of sweet incense beaten small, within the vail…that he die not. Leviticus 16:12-13

Before the blood went into the holiest, there must first be “the cloud of the incense.” Failure on Aaron’s part to obey would result in instant death! This is a beautiful picture of the fragrance of Christ, rising as worship from burning hearts for the delight of God first. One cannot help but wonder if the same judgement were applied today for empty hands, cold hearts, and human alternatives at the Lord’s Supper, how many of us would survive the day? —J. Boyd Nicholson

Much incense is ascending,
Before the eternal throne;
God graciously is bending,
To hear each feeble groan. —M. Peters

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 28:1-37; Amos 3-4; Luke 14:1-24

For he saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2

As an emergency room physician, I saw patients soon after they were injured. “What happened?” I would ask. Commonly they responded: “Well, it was so stupid, I was just…” In other words, they knew better, but did not take the time or care to prevent an injury. How tragic and terrible would it be for one who knew Christ died for their sins, and who knew that accepting Him as Saviour and Lord would mean eternal life; how tragic indeed for such a one to be cast into the lake of fire. Forever. —David Logan

Come to the Saviour, make no delay;
Here in His Word, He’s shown us the way. —George F. Root

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 26:16 to 27:26; Amos 1-2; Luke 13:22-35

For the prophecy came not in old time by the will of man: but holy men of God spake as they were moved by the Holy Ghost. 2 Peter 1:21

The writings of these inspired men are the record of divine revelation. What God revealed, they recorded. The persons receiving it could not have discovered it by human means. In many instances, the writers confessed that they did not fully understand the full meaning of the message, but under the guidance of the Holy Spirit they recorded it. In the providence and protection of God we have in our hands and hopefully in our hearts, all that we need to live for the glory of the One who gave His life for us. —Drew Craig

Holy Bible, book divine, precious treasure, tbou art mine;
Mine to tell me whence I came, mine to teach me what I am. —John Burton
