Description

Fisher of Men: Sharing God’s Word With Sailors at Glasgow Docks
By: Sam Laughlan

A collection of short stories of one man’s Christian Crusade among the Seamen who came to Glasgow Docks between 1990 and 2007. The stories in this book are for the glory and praise of God for all that has been done in His Name. It is hoped that the reader will be challenged, whether Christian or not.

This book will appeal to people of all ages. It contains a variety of stories concerning the years Sam Laughlin spent visiting the ships that docked in Glasgow. This work began after Sam’s retirement at the age of 65. The call from the Lord came to him one summer’s morning when he saw a ship on the river as he drove along the Clyde-side. Having obtained permission from Clyde Port Authority, he began to visit the ships, continiuing in this work for 16 years. The stories are touching, amusing, and kind, and demonstrate God’s love in action. The ships of the world constitute a vast mission field – 1 million seamen and 30,000 ships. It was to such a mission Sam Laughlin was called. To God be the glory!

Sam Laughlin was born and brought up in the city of Glasgow in the districts of Kinning Park and Plantation.  When WW2 began, he was evacuated to his grandfather’s farm in Co. Tyrone in Northern Ireland. Soon he was called up to the army and spent the next four formative years in the Far East. Returning home, he resumed his apprenticeship in a Glasgow Shipyard where he remained for 25 years. After the decline of the shipyards in Glasgow, Sam worked in a large city advertising agency. When he retired from secular work, the Lord had a new work for Sam to do: visiting the ships that dock in Glasgow.
