Solomon’s splendour and glorious reign of righteousness over Israel is the subject of the first half of 1 Kings. However, even the rule of the world’s wisest man quickly came to ruin resulting in his kingdom being divided into the 10-tribe Israel and the 2-tribe Judah.

The second half of 1 Kings focuses primarily on the dark and sad histories of the kings of Israel – the northern division of the kingdom. Across its pages, too, stride God’s bold messengers, the prophets, who become the new link between God and the people in place of the kings.

Down through the years very few commentators have gone through 1 Kings chapter by chapter, incident by incident, as Henri Rossier does in this book just recently translated into English from the French. Not only does he look into detail at history itself – again and again he directs our attention to the Lord’s Anointed, that One who stands in such evident contrast even to those kings and prophets who are types and shadows of Him.
