As Moses lift ed up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lift ed up. John 3:14
Our Lord alludes to an Old Testament story that presents a glorious picture of the gospel. Deadly serpents had come among the Israelites. Once bitt en there was no expectation but death. But God provided deliverance—a brass serpent was elevated on a pole along with this promise: “All who look will live.” We are born in sin with no expectation but death. But God has provided deliverance—His Son. He was elevated on a Roman cross, for all to see, with this promise, “Whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life” (John 3:16). ’Tis recorded in His word, hallelujah! It is only that you “look and live.”—W. A. O
