William Murdoch was an acclaimed Scottish inventor, a giant of the Industrial Revolution. Lord Kelvin, referring to Murdoch’s greatest invention—gas lighting, said that Murdoch did “great things for the whole world.” Perhaps at that time he did but nobody remembers it much now. And opened the Life-gate that all may go in. —Ira D. Sankey
