Lord’s Day, April 18, 2021

Leviticus 25:1-55; Psalm 139:1-24; Mark 10:1-31

And saith unto them, My soul is exceeding sorrowful unto death: tarry ye here, and watch. Mark 14:34

The Lord’s sufferings included the awful psychological effects of anticipating bearing sin’s judgment. As the Son of God approached the cross, His perfectly holy mind was filled with sorrow at the coming unfathomable wrath. As fallen beings we have no idea of the torment that the impeccable Saviour endured in our place as He became “sin for us” (2 Cor. 5:21). Thankfully, He drained that cursed cup to its dregs; as the hymn says: “left but the love for me”. —K. R. Keyser

How bitter the cup, no heart can conceive,
Which He drunk quite up, that sinners might live!
His way was much rougher, and darker than mine;
Did Jesus thus suffer, and shall I repine? —John Newton
