2 Kings 17:1-41; Jeremiah 51:1-24; 1 Timothy 1:1-20

And, behold, I am with thee, and will keep thee in all places whither thou goest, and will bring thee again into this land. Genesis 28:15

Jacob was fleeing for his life and his future looked dangerously uncertain. On his way he rested at Bethel and God spoke to him in a dream to allay his fears. Firstly, the Lord would be his companion, “I am with thee” secondly, his protector, “I…will keep thee” and thirdly, his guide, “I…will bring thee again into this land.” Those wonderful covenant promises sustained Jacob through twenty years of trials. The Lord’s promises are the same for us. —Paul Young

Tenderly guide us, O Shepherd of Love,
To the green pastures and waters above,
Guarding us ever by night and by day,
Never from Thee would we stray. —Sophia T. Griswold
