Genesis 2:4-25; Job 2:11-3:26; Matthew 2:1-23

Then David said to the Philistine, “You come to me with a sword, with a spear, and with a javelin. But I come to you in the name of the LORD of hosts, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.” 1 Samuel 17:45 NKJV

Israel saw a giant. David saw a man defying God. What seemed like “wasted years” caring for his father’s few sheep, were now most valuable! The boy, dismissed by his father, was the chosen one of God. During those lonely days and nights with the flock, he learned lessons for life and the nearness of God’s presence. The same is true today. The hours spent with God, and the disciplines of life will prepare us to face life’s giants and shape us into faithful
shepherds (1 Cor. 10:11). —Jim Comte

The Lord’s my Shepherd, I’ll not want. He makes me down to lie
In pastures green; He leadeth me, the quiet waters by. —Scottish Psalter
