DAILY READINGS: Numbers 8; Proverbs 5 to 6:19; Mark 15:24-47

And the seventh angel sounded; and there were great voices in heaven, saying, The kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord, and of His Christ; and He shall reign for ever and ever. Revelation 11:15

Once our Lord was despised and rejected. But the day is coming, when He will return as King of Kings and Lord of Lords. All the world will come under His sway, and He will reign in righteousness. The reed will be replaced with a rod of iron. The crown of thorns will be replaced with a crown of glory, and the cross will be replaced by the throne. As we look at the moral, spiritual, political and social deterioration in this world, we look forward to that time when He shall reign for ever and ever. —W. H. Burnett

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 7; Proverbs 4; Mark 15:1-23

But He was wounded for our transgressions, He was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with His stripes we are healed. Isaiah 53:5

Here is the great Gospel doctrine of substitution. Another Man is wounded for my transgressions. Another Man is bruised for my iniquities. The chastisement due for my peace is laid upon my Substitute and with His stripes I am healed. The grand summary of the verse is, “He was wounded…we are healed”. —Jim Flanigan

In rich abounding grace,
He took my guilty place,
With all its deep disgrace,
And died for me.—Author Unknown

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 6; Proverbs 3; Mark 14:53-72

Sing and rejoice, O daughter of Zion: for, lo, I come, and I will dwell in the midst of thee, saith the LORD. Zechariah 2:10

God has always desired to be in the centre of His people’s lives. In the garden, the tree of life was in the midst, symbolizing the blessing of a relationship with the Creator (Jn. 17:3; Rev. 2:7). In the desert, God pitched His tent in the middle of the tribes. In the church, the Lord Jesus is in the midst (Mt. 18:20; Rev. 1:13). Sadly, the Laodicean church excluded Him, and thus He stood outside calling to the individual believers that remained to fellowship with Him (Rev. 3:20). Our attention should focus on the One in the midst. —K. R. Keyser

Thus may we abide in union with each other and with the Lord;
And possess, in sweet communion, joys which earth can ne’er afford.—John Newton

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 5; Proverbs 2; Mark 14:27-52

Pilate therefore said unto him, Art thou a king then? Jesus answered, Thou sayest that I am a king. To this end was I born, and for this cause came I into the world, that I should bear witness unto the truth. Every one that is of the truth heareth my voice. John 18:37

Truth versus Lie is the great battle of the ages. Christ came into the world to testify to the truth. Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ (Jn. 1:17). “We beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth,” (Jn.1:14). Do we know and live daily in the truth? Do we live to testify to the One who is truth? —Donald MacMullen

Open Thy word of truth, that I may see,
Thy message written clear and plain for me;
Then in sweet fellowship walking with Thee,
Thine image on my life engraved will be. —M. Lathbury

Lord’s Day, April 24, 2011

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 4; Proverbs 1; Mark 14:1-26

And he said unto them, What things? And they said unto him, Concerning Jesus of Nazareth, which was a prophet mighty in deed and word before God and all the people. Luke 24:19

Full of grief, Cleopas and his colleague discussed the sad events of the past few days. The stranger who joined them asked about their sorrow, and they responded that the One they had hoped was the Messiah had died and disappeared. They were occupied with the bad news when there was such good news to enjoy. Women had found the tomb empty and other disciples had verified the fact! Today let us rejoice that: “He is not here, He is risen.” May we be occupied with the His glorious resurrection. It will change your day from disappointment to delight. —Arnot P. McIntee

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 3; Psalms 148-150; Mark 13

But when the morning was now come, Jesus stood on the shore: but the disciples knew not that it was Jesus. John 21:4

This must have been an amazing morning for those tired, cold and weary disciples. They toiled all night for fish to feed their hunger, but to no avail. Trusting in their own efforts and expertise as fisherman they came up empty. But Jesus stood on the shore! Their world would change that day when He entered the scene. What they needed the Lord provided in the way He alone could. As Creator of the universe He had the fish ready on the fire. He is still the same today, able to provide in unique and wondrous ways to those who trust Him alone for their need. —Jim Paul

Every need He is supplying, plenteous grace He bestows;
Every day my way gets brighter,
The longer I serve Him, the sweeter He grows. —B. Gaither

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 2; Psalms 146-147; Mark 12:18-44

If Christ be preached that He rose from the dead, how say some among you that there is no resurrection of the dead? 1 Cor. 15:12

The core of apostolic preaching was the bodily resurrection of the Lord Jesus Christ. When this passage was written, the declaration was 30 years old and well circulated throughout the world. Undoubtedly much critical investigation had been provoked and the skeptical researchers had aired their oppositions. Yet Paul boldly speaks out in defense of this radiant truth. Consider the number and quality of the witnesses of this event—the price they paid for their stand. It is evident that He lives, the Man in the glory, to preside over the entitlements of those who love Him. —E. F.

He rose! He burst immortal, from death’s dark realm alone,
And left its heavenward portal, swung wide for all His own.—Theron Brown

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 1; Psalms 144-145; Mark 11:27 to 12:17

For the LORD is good; His mercy is everlasting; and His truth endureth to all generations. Psalms 100:5

Several years ago my wife had a serious but unknown health problem. We feared the worst but were thankful to find out that although major surgery was needed, it was not a cancerous tumour. Some time later someone said to her, “Wasn’t God good that it wasn’t cancer?” I’ll never forget her reply, “God would have still been good even if it had been cancer.” Goodness is one of God's great attributes and we can rest upon it. No matter the situation, “Goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord forever,” (Psalm 23:6). Remember, God is good, all of the time! —James Comte

Whose love is as great as His power, and knows neither measure nor end.—Joseph Hart

DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 27; Psalms 142-143; Mark 11:1-26

And Pilate asked him, saying, Art thou the King of the Jews? And He answered him and said, Thou sayest it. Luke 23:3

Pilate was in a difficult situation. He was being forced to make a decision about who Christ was. In the end he avoided answering and decided on a politically expedient course. He went to the people for their verdict. One day the question will be asked of us, "Who do you say I am?” This time the question will come from the very throne of God. The answer we give will determine our eternal fate. Will we be with the Lord in glory or cast from His presence? We cannot rely on others. The answer must come from us. Friend I trust you know today what your answer is. —Brad Dunn

It must be settled tonight, tomorrow may be too late;
The angel of death may come, and seal forever my fate. —C. B. Kendall

DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 26; Psalm 140-141; Mark 10:32-52

Remember them which have the rule over you, who have spoken unto you the word of God: whose faith follow, considering the end of their conversation. Hebrews 13:7

The shepherds or elders in the local assembly have a heavy responsibility. As our Lord’s representative they must be His example to the flock they shepherd. They must be on guard for false teaching. They must care for the weak and strong, young and old, male and female, from all walks of life. Let us pray for them and their families. Let us help them with their work. Let us defend them when they have been falsely accused. Let us lovingly yield to their rule over us for they "watch out for the souls of the flock." —Bob Cretney
