DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 25; Psalm 139; Mark 10:1-31

Wilt thou set thine eyes upon that which is not? for riches certainly make themselves wings; they fly away as an eagle toward heaven. Proverbs 23:5

Lotteries are common-place in most nations and many dream of winning the big prize. However, recent studies have revealed a phenomenon known as the “lottery curse”—describing the heartache that has come to many who have won. There are accounts of divorce, suicide, murder, and untold problems for those who “will be rich.” Trust not in “uncertain riches,” God says. “Godliness with contentment is great gain,” (1 Tim. 6.6). We may not be buying lottery tickets, but what does the focus of our life reveal about what we think is truly valuable? —W. H. Gustafson

God hath here on earth a treasure, none but He its price may know,
Deep, unfathomable pleasure, Christ revealed in saints below. —A. W. B.

DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 24; Psalms 137-138; Mark 9:33-50

And when the devil had ended all the temptation, he departed from him for a season. Luke 4:13

There appeared an angel unto him from heaven, strengthening him. And being in an agony, He prayed more earnestly. Luke 22:43, 44a

Having failed in his temptation of Jesus, the devil left “for a season.” Was the agony (derived from Greek agon, “contest” or “struggle”) in Gethsemane the result of a renewed attack? That an angel strengthened Him there seems amazing. He humbled Himself to the extent that, becoming a man, He would, as a man, operate within this boundary condition to complete the victory for all mankind over sin, death, and hell. —Tom Steere

We bless our Saviour’s name, our sins are all forgiven;
To suffer, once to earth He came, He now is crowned in heaven. —J. Deck

DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 23:23-44; Psalms 135-136; Mark 9:14 -32

For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he: Eat and drink, saith he to thee; but his heart is not with thee. Proverbs 23:7

As ye have therefore received Christ Jesus the Lord, so walk ye in him. Colossians 2:6

In England we noticed a sign, “Mind your head!” In the United States, signs read, “Watch your step.” These warnings from head to toe, are similar to heavenly warnings in the Scriptures. We are to take every thought captive to the obedience of Christ, for as we think, so are we. God also exhorts us to walk as we have received Christ—by faith. Mind your head and watch your step —two good reminders for the day! —Rex Trogdon

Help me to walk aright, more by faith, less by sight,
Lead me with heav’nly light; teach me Thy way! —B. Mansell Ramsey

DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 23:1-22; Psalms 132-134; Mark 8:27 to 9:13

But rise, and stand upon thy feet: for I have appeared unto thee for this purpose, to make thee a minister and a witness both of these things which thou hast seen, and of those things in the which I will appear unto thee. Acts 26:16

This word “minister” refers to the under-rower, the oarsman in the lower decks who rowed the ship—unnoticed, unappreciated. Typically a slave, he received the meanest of rations and the barest of life’s necessities. Is Christ enough for me? This burning question must be answered if we truly desire Him to “make us” what He wants us to be. Will I allow Him only to be my sufficiency (2 Cor. 12:9) and my reward (Isa. 45:13)? —Rick Morse

Go, labour on: spend and be spent; thy joy to do the Father’s will
It is the way the Master went; should not the servant tread it still? —Horatius Bonar

DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 22; Psalm 128-131; Mark 8:11-26

And the soldiers platted a crown of thorns, and put it on His head, and they put on him a purple robe. John 19:2

The soldiers of Caesar mocked our Lord’s kingship, giving Him a crown, a royal robe, a reed for a sceptre, and feigned homage as they said “Hail, King of the Jews!” But the thorny crown which He wore was a victor’s crown. The Caesars are gone, their bodies are decomposed with their empire, but the despised Man who wore the crown of thorns lives on in glory, in the power of an endless life, and shall yet reign on earth. —Jim Flanigan

Jesus shall reign where’er the sun,
Doth His successive journeys run;
His kingdom stretch from shore to shore,
Till moons shall wax and wane no more. —Isaac Watts

DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 21; Psalms 124-127; Mark 7:24 to 8:10

For my people have committed two evils; they have forsaken me the fountain of living waters, and hewed them out cisterns, broken cisterns, that can hold no water. Jeremiah 2:13

Trekking across the Ngangela plain we were hot, tired and terribly thirsty; longing to reach the well we had heard about. Suddenly there it was! But our hopes were crushed—it was broken and dry! Have you spent years seeking satisfaction in the broken cisterns of this world? With all your shattered hopes, come to the Lord Jesus Christ who said, “The water that I shall give him will be a fountain… springing up to eternal life,” (John 4:14). —David Croudace

I tried the broken cisterns, Lord, but ah! The waters failed!
E’en as I stooped to drink they fled, and mocked me as I wailed.
Now none but Christ can satisfy, none other Name for me!—B.B.

DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 19-20; Psalms 120-123; Mark 7:1-23

In my distress I cried unto the LORD, and He heard me. Ps. 120:1

What a blessing to know that in my times of deepest despair I can go into the throne room of my heavenly Father and He hears me. I can go day or night to Him. And He hears me. He never sleeps. He never slumbers. He is always there to listen to the cries of my heart. My Father loves and cares for me. What joy! Lord, give me strength to take it all to You. —V. Gaynier

Are we weak and haven laden,
Cumbered with a load of care?
Precious Saviour, still our refuge,
Take it to the Lord in prayer.—Joseph Scriven

DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 17-18; Psalm 119:145-176; Mark 6:30-56

For whether is greater, he that sitteth at meat, or he that serveth? is not he that sitteth at meat? but I am among you as he that serveth. Luke 22:27

Do we count it a pleasure to serve fellow believers in whatever capacity we can? Indeed can we point to a single thing done in service for the Lord which has been for their blessing and benefit? May God help us to examine our hearts today. May we follow in Christ's humble steps and faithfully meet the needs of others. —Brian Powlesland

No service in itself is small,
And none great though earth it fill;
But that is small that seeks its own,
And great that seeks God’s will.—Author Unknown

DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 16; Psalm 119:113-144; Mark 6:1-29

And Jesus answered them, saying, The hour is come, that the Son of man should be glorified. Verily, verily, I say unto you, Except a corn of wheat fall into the ground and die, it abideth alone: but if it die, it bringeth forth much fruit. John 12:23-24

Amazing delight! That the highest glory of God the Son should be won by His humiliation, agony, and death at Calvary. And that this glory should be the transcending theme of heaven, where He will eternally be exalted as the Redeemer and Saviour of men. And more yet—that the glory He thus achieved should be bestowed on those saved by His death, “The glory which thou gavest Me I have given them,” (John 17:22). It was for the joy that was set before Him that He endured the cross. —Doug Kazen

Glory to Thee thou Son of God most high, all praise to Thee;
Glory to Thee, enthroned above the sky, who died for me. —E. C. Quine

DAILY READINGS: Leviticus 15; Psalm 119:73-112; Mark 5:21-43

Faithful is He that calleth you, who also will do it. 1 Thess. 5:24

Hudson Taylor, the pioneer missionary to China, chose as the motto of his life the words of the Lord Jesus Christ in Mark 11:22, “Have faith in God.” Commenting on the subject of faith, he said: “Reckon not only on your own faith, but also on God’s faithfulness to you. All my life I’ve been fickle: sometimes I could trust and sometimes I couldn’t; but when unable to have faith, it was a great encouragement to realize that God would still be faithful to me.” —W. Ross Rainey

Have faith in God, the sun will shine,
Though dark the cloud may be today,
His heart hath planned your path and mine;
Have faith in God, have faith alway. —May Agnew Stephens
