DAILY READINGS: Numbers 34 to 35:8; Proverbs 30; Luke 5:1-16

For precept must be upon precept…line upon line….here a little and there a little. Isaiah 28:10

Several years ago my husband received an apple tree as a Father’s Day gift. It grew year by year and now bears abundantly, unless hindered by a late frost. Likewise, spiritual maturity is not an overnight occurence. Nutrition from the Scriptures, prayer and learning from others contribute to growth. When we stray from the path or rebel at hardship, a chilling occurs and growth is stunted. The warmth of Christian fellowship helps restore development. May we not be a disappointment to the Keeper of the vineyard but keep on bearing the fruit of the Spirit. —E. Dyck

I would draw nearer to Jesus, nothing withholding from Him,
Knowing He loves to be gracious, I would draw nearer to Him.—R. Harknes

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 33; Proverbs 29; Luke 4:16-44

Every day will I bless thee; and I will praise Thy name for ever and ever. Psalm 145:2

David’s life traversed the spectrum of human experience. There were good days when he felt greatly blessed, but there were also bad days, filled with disappointment, discouragement, and depression. Yet he rose above his circumstances and blessed the Lord every day. Our lives are the same. There are times when the south wind blows softly, and the skies are cloudless and bright. Other times we feel the blast of the north wind, and clouds “gather thick and thunder loud”. May we like David, look beyond our circumstances, and raise our voices every day in praise and blessing to the Lord. —W. H. Burnett

We thank thee for the desert road, and for the river side,
For all Thy goodness has bestowed, and all Thy grace denied. —J. Crewdson

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 32; Proverbs 28; Luke 4:1-15

The fire shall ever be burning upon the altar; it shall never go out. Leviticus 6:13

Whether it was the brazen altar of salvation, or the golden altar of communion, the fire could never go out. We too have altars in our life that should never go out. Our daily devotions that put our heart in tune with the music of heaven. The “family altar", where our children hear of God’s grace and get a foretaste of heaven. These fires must not go out or grow dim. They need to be a steady glow, to warm the heart and light the way. The sacred oil of the Holy Spirit, poured on the live coals of Scripture, will keep the fire burning brightly, for the glory of God and for our spiritual wellbeing. —Milton Haack

Thus may we abide in union, with the Scriptures and our Lord,
And possess, in sweet communion, joys which earth cannot afford.—Anon.

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 30-31; Proverbs 26:13 to 27:27; Luke 3

Peace I leave with you, My peace I give unto you: not as the world giveth, give I unto you. Let not your heart be troubled, neither let it be afraid. John 14:27

While He had been with them, Jesus’ disciples had received His blessings many times. But now He was going to leave them and the coming years would be filled with many troubles. But He left them His peace. What a blessed gift. Our circumstances often rob us of that gift. But it is still to be found, leaning on His breast and resting in the Lord. He is our peace. —V. Gaynier

In heavenly love abiding, no change my heart shall fear,
And safe is such confiding, for nothing changes here.
The storm may roar without me, my heart may low be laid;
But God is round about me, and can I be dismayed? —A. W.

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 29; Proverbs 25 to 26:12; Luke 2:22-52

The LORD is my rock, and my fortress, and my deliverer; my God, my strength, in whom I will trust; my buckler, and the horn of my salvation, and my high tower. Psalms 18:2

If I want a safe dwelling, I need a rock to build on. I don’t want to build on the sand! (Mt 7:26) So, I find that “The Lord is my rock". But then I start to work, and find I’m not very good at fortress building, so, “He is my fortress". Then, when I take the shelter He provides, the enemy attacks and I find I’m no good at defending my fortress even once I’m inside, but “He is my deliverer". No wonder David said, “Praise the name of the Lord"! (Ps 148:13). —H. Smith

Praise the name of Jesus, praise the name of Jesus;
He’s my Rock, He’s my Fortress, He’s my Deliverer,
In Him will I trust. Praise the name of Jesus. —Roy Hicks, Jr.

Lord’s Day, May 16, 2010

DAILY READINGS: Numbers 28; Proverbs 24; Luke 2:1-21

Unto you therefore which believe He is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner, 1 Peter 2:7

How precious is the Lord Jesus to me and to you? More precious than everything else? Precious enough to daily spend time in His Word? Precious enough to delight in His presence and speak often with Him everyday? Precious enough to look forward to the Lord’s Day to keep His dying request? “Do ye this in remembrance of Me until I come”. May it be so for His name sake! —E. MacLelland

Gathered to Thy name, Lord Jesus,
Losing sight of all but Thee,
O what joy Thy presence gives us,
Calling up our hearts to Thee. —C. A. Wellesley

DAILY READINGS: Num. 26:52 to 27:23; Prov. 23:12-35; Luke 1:57-80

God saw everything that He had made, and, behold, it was very good. Genesis 1:31
God saw that the wickedness of man was great on the earth. Genesis 6:5
But Noah found grace in the eyes of the Lord. Genesis 6:8

These are the first two times the word “saw” is used in relation to God. In the first instance God saw that all of His work was very good. In the second, He saw that all of man’s works were wicked. It seems so much so in our lives too. What He does is so good and what we do falls so far short. But He doesn’t give up on us. The Lord sought out Noah. He rested His eyes upon him and Noah found grace in that gaze. Look to Him today and you will find grace in His eyes too. —S. McEachern

Grace taught my wandering feet, to tread the heavenly road;
And new supplies each hour I meet, while pressing on to God. —P. Doddridge

DAILY READINGS: Num. 25 to 26:51; Prov. 22:17 to 23:11; Luke 1:26-56

Think not that I came to destroy the Law or the Prophets. I did not come to destroy but to fulfill. Matt. 5:17

The Law is God’s perfect standard reflecting His own holy character. What hope do we have to ever keep God’s perfect Law? The answer—the Lord Jesus came “to fulfill” the Law. In His life He became our perfect example; “I always do those things that please Him” (John 8:29). The Law says, “the soul that sinneth, it shall die” (Ezek. 8:4). “…Christ died for us” (Rom. 5:8). The Lord Jesus Christ fulfills the Law perfectly! He is our substitute, example and our daily Sanctification. —Milton Haack

I’ve found a Friend, Who is all to me, His love is ever true;
I love to tell how He lifted me And what His grace can do for you.—J.B.S.

DAILY READINGS: Num. 23:27-24:25; Prov. 21:12-22:16; Luke 1:1-25

The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry. Psalms 34:15

When we begin to feel no one cares for us, we should take heart from God’s compassionate response to Israel’s experience in Egypt. We read that God heard their groaning, that He looked upon them and said, I have seen their affliction; I have heard their cry; I know their sorrows (Ex. 3:7). That same heavenly Father is caring for us today— the only One able to meet every need. —W. Ross Rainey

Does Jesus care when my heart is pained
Too deeply for mirth or song,
As the burdens press, and the cares distress,
And the way grows weary and long?
Oh yes I know He cares. —Frank Graeff

DAILY READINGS: Num. 22:39-23:26; Prov. 20 to 21:11; James 4:13-5:20

And the king stood by a pillar, and made a covenant before the LORD, to walk after the LORD, and to keep His commandments and His testimonies and His statutes with all their heart and all their soul, to perform the words of this covenant that were written in this book. And all the people stood to the covenant. 2 Kgs. 23:3

The high priest had found the long lost Word of God and read it to Josiah. This young king was convicted by it and dedicated his life to obeying what God had written. The result was a major revival. Are you, as a young person today, willing to take God’s Word at face value and commit your life to obeying it? If so, you too will see God’s rich blessing flowing through you. —David Croudace

Open Thy word of truth, that I may see,
Thy message written clear and plain for me. —M. A. Lathbury
