DAILY READINGS: 1 Kings 6; Jeremiah 13; Ephesians 5:22 to 6:9

When I saw Him, I fell at His feet as dead. And He laid His right
hand upon me, saying unto me, Fear not; I am the fi rst and the last.
Revelation 1:17

John was awe-struck when he got a glimpse of the glory of our risen
Lord. The beautiful hymn, “Immanuel’s Land” expresses John’s reaction
and what our goal and att itude should be in worship. The
hymn rightly ends with, “The Lamb is all the glory, in Immanuel’s
land.” Amen! —Milton Haack

The bride eyes not her garment, but her dear Bridegroom’s face.
I will not gaze at glory but on my King of grace,
Not at the crown He giveth but on His pirced hand;
The Lamb is all the glory of Immanuel’s land. —Anne R. Cousin

DAILY READINGS: 1 Kings 4-5; Jeremiah 12; Ephesians 5:1-21

Acquaint now thyself with Him, and be at peace: thereby good
shall come unto thee. Job 22:21
For He saith, I have heard thee in a time accepted, and in the day
of salvation have I succoured thee: behold, now is the accepted
time; behold, now is the day of salvation. 2 Corinthians 6:2

The large billboard advertised a doctor’s clinic. It read, “Nobody
ever got well in a waiting room.” The same is true in the spiritual
realm. There is nothing to wait for. The Saviour is calling you today
to come to Him, and be delivered from sin and saved for time and
for eternity. “Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden,
and I will give you rest” (Mt. 11:28). Come today. —Wade LeBlanc

Just as I am, Thou wilt receive, wilt welcome, pardon, cleanse, relievebe,
Because Thy promise I believe, O Lamb of God, I come. —C. Elliot

DAILY READINGS: 1 Kings 3; Jeremiah 11; Ephesians 4:17-32

Faithful is he that calleth you, who also will do it. 1 Thess. 5:24
The Lord is faithful, who shall stablish you, and keep you from evil.
2 Thessalonians 3:3

Perhaps we need to be reassured of God’s faithfulness towards us.
Our many failures to be true to Him may cause us to question if He
remains faithful to us. If troubled by such thoughts, it is good for us
to rest on the fact that His faithfulness depends not on what we are,
but on who He is. Since He is the God of truth, He is utt erly reliable
and trustworthy! —George Hall

Great is Thy faithfulness, O God my Father!
There is no shadow of turning with Thee;
Thou changest not; Thy compassions, they fail not;
As Thou hast been, Thou forever wilt be. —T. O. Chisholm

DAILY READINGS: 1 Kings 2; Jeremiah 10; Ephesians 4:1-16

Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity,
peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart.
2 Tim. 2:22

True Christians don’t do their own thing; they are good followers. We
begin, of course, by answering the call of the Lord to salvation and
discipleship, “Follow Me.” Christ said, “My sheep hear My voice, I
know them, and they follow Me.” Then Paul says to follow “righteousness,
godliness, faith, charity, peace with those who call on the
Lord out of a pure heart.” Are these the things we follow? Do we
choose our friends by this holy criteria? We should! We can’t follow
the Lord if we’re walking in the counsel of the ungodly.—Carl Knott

Jesus calls us over the tumult, of our life’s wild, restless, sea;
Day by day His sweet voice soundeth, saying, “Christian, follow Me!”—C. F. A.

DAILY READINGS: 1 Kings 1; Jeremiah 9; Ephesians 3

God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be
no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be
any more pain: for the former things are passed away. Rev. 21:4

What bliss awaits us as God’s children. Possibly sooner than we realize,
we shall leave this world behind, and be ushered into heaven
and its joys. There is much that we do not know about that blessed
place, because our present limitations prevent us from taking it in.
But one thing we do know, every single evidence of the curse that
sin introduced in Eden will be absent there, and the Lamb will be
the light thereof. Let’s live out life’s litt le day in the joyful anticipation
of that moment of glorious emancipation. —W. H. Burnett

We shall read the tender meaning, of the sorrows and alarms,
As we trod the desert leaning, on His everlasting arms. —Anne R. Cousins

DAILY READINGS: 2 Samuel 24; Jeremiah 8; Ephesians 2:11-22

For I know that my redeemer liveth, and that He shall stand at the
latt er day upon the earth: And though worms destroy this body,
yet in my fl esh shall I see God. Job 19:25-26

Our Redeemer died to pay for the penalty for our sins. Yes He died
but He rose again. He lives and sits at the right hand of the Father to
intercede for us. We have a living Saviour! Praise God, we will live
forever with Him because of the work of our Lord Jesus on the cross.
Today we can go out and face the world knowing that our Redeemer
lives and that we are loved beyond imagination. —V. Gaynier

Redeemed how I love to proclaim it!
Redeemed by the blood of the Lamb;
Redeemed through His infi nite mercy,
His child and forever, I am. —F. Crosby

DAILY READINGS: 2 Samuel 23; Jeremiah 7; Ephesians 1:15 to 2:10

When they came unto the threshing fl oor of Chidon, Uzza put forth
his hand to hold the ark; for the oxen stumbled. 1 Chron. 13:9

David was doing the right thing by bringing the ark back, but he did
it in the wrong way! God had instructed that Levites were the only
ones permitt ed to carry the ark. Not even a new cart could replace His
writt en word. Furthermore, Uzza was not a Levite. When the Word of
God gives us clear instructions we must be humble enough to simply
obey, not feel we know bett er than God. —David Croudace

Open Thou mine ears, Lord; let me hear Thy voice;
And with swift obedience, cause Thee to rejoice.
Midst this world’s confusion, speak, O Lord, to me;
Guide me by Thy word Lord, let me follow Thee. —A. P. Gibbs

Lord’s Day, September 6, 2009

DAILY READINGS: 2 Samuel 22; Jeremiah 6; Ephesians 1:1-14

It was about the sixth hour, and there was a darkness over all the
earth until the ninth hour. Luke 23:44

At the birth of the Saviour, darkness was illuminated by the glory
of the Lord. At His death, the brightness of the mid-day light was
darkened. It was not an eclipse, nor ordinary darkness, but rather a
supernatural event. Men had never experienced a darkness like it.
God in infi nite wisdom chose to withdraw light from the scene of
our Lord’s crucifi xion. We cannot fully understand what our Lord
endured during those hours of darkness. By faith we believe it and
that He endured it for us. —John M. Clegg

Well might the sun in darkness hide and shut His glories in,
When the incarnate Maker died, for man, His creature’s sin. —Isaac Watts

DAILY READINGS: 2 Samuel 21; Jeremiah 5; Galatians 6

Be ye doers of the word, and not hearers only, deceiving your own
selves. James 1:22

It is easy to hear a good message or to read a good thought and
even to remark upon its quality, and then to go on unchanged by it.
This is like remarking upon a good medicine that could cure one’s
illness, yet never taking it. If we act thus, we can hardly blame the
medicine for not benefi ting us. The Word of God, faithfully ministered,
is good and needed spiritual medicine. But we must do more
than simply applaud it. We must take it in and let it change us. We
are deceived if we think well of ourselves because we merely hear
what is good, but fail to be doers of it. —Doug Kazen

Let me know my need, Lord, and Thy glories see,
Grow in grace and knowledge, more and more like Thee! —Alfred P. Gibbs

DAILY READINGS: 2 Samuel 20; Jeremiah 4:3-31; Galatians 5:10-26

Behold, God is my salvation; I will trust, and not be afraid: for the
LORD Jehovah is my strength and my song; He also is become my
salvation. Isaiah 12:2

Fear debilitates and in life there is much to cause anxiety. Very often
help is needed to surmount fear and the irrational behaviour it
sometimes incites. Here, Isaiah has the answer, “I will trust.” Our
trust, like his, should be in the Lord at all times and in every circumstance.
He promises to become our strength, our song and our
salvation. That is enough. Indeed, it is everything that we need, not
only for survival but also for progress. We should not fear what man
can do. We can do all things through Christ. —Roy Hill

I will not be afraid, I will not be afraid;
I will look upward, and travel onward, and not be afraid. —Ellis Govan
