DAILY READINGS: Gen. 22; Job 25-26; Matt. 12:1-21

Elij ah was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. James 5:17

Elij ah was hiding from Ahab. But, what was he doing? In many ways—nothing! Yet Elij ah was just as much in the will of God during that period of seeming idleness as when he confronted the mighty Ahab on Mt. Carmel. Certainly his physical inactivity did not hinder his prayer life and all the while he was the object of God’s tender love and care. Are some of us enduring forced inactivity of some type? What lessons in faith, humility, obedience and guidance can we learn during “this season” for God’s glory and our comfort? —V. Markle

Are you weary, are you heavy-hearted? Tell it to Jesus, tell it to Jesus.
Are you grieving over joys departed? Tell it to Jesus alone. —E. S. Lorenz

DAILY READINGS: Gen. 20-21; Job 23-24; Matt . 11:2-30

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, whereunto thou art also called, and hast professed a good profession before many witnesses. 1 Timothy 6:12

The Christian life is a batt le. We are to behave like soldiers. Our enemies certainly will! Paul, at the end of his life, said, “I have fought the good fight.” Now he is gone to be with the Lord. Jude exhorted us to contend earnestly for the faith. Now he is gone to be with the Lord too. Where are the believers who will put on the armour and stand (Eph. 6:11-19), who will resist the devil (Jas. 4:7), and strive in defense of the faith? Humanly speaking, it depends on us. Will you live today like a good soldier of Christ? —Carl Knott

DAILY READINGS: Gen. 19; Job 22; Matt . 10:24 to 11:1

There shall be no more curse: but the throne of God and of the Lamb shall be in it; and His servants shall serve Him. Rev. 22:3

What a joy and delight to dwell in the eternal state. Perfect restoration—no more curse. Perfect administration—the throne of God and the Lamb in it. Perfect subordination—His servants shall serve Him. Perfect transformation—they shall see His face. Perfect identification— His name in their foreheads. Perfect illumination—the Lord God gives them light. Perfect exaltation—they shall reign forever and ever. —Duncan Maxwell

Wonderful Saviour, wonderful Friend;
Wonderful love that never will end;

DAILY READINGS: Gen. 18; Job 21; Matt . 10:1-23

Yea doubtless, and I count all things but loss for the excellency of the knowledge of Christ Jesus my Lord: for whom I have suff ered the loss of all things, and do count them but dung, that I may win Christ. Philippians 3:8

Arrogant Saul’s religious resumé was discarded aft er conversion, in favour of the righteousness that comes from Christ alone. Nothing from man can compare with the riches of His grace. —K.R. Keyser

The more through grace ourselves we know,
The more rejoiced we are to bow,
And glory in Thy cross;
To trust in Thine atoning blood,
And look to Thee for every good,
And count all else but dross. —C. Batty

DAILY READINGS: Gen. 17; Job 20; Matt . 9:18-38

King David said to Ornan, Nay; but I will verily buy it for the full price: for I will not take that which is thine for the LORD, nor offer burnt off erings without cost. 1 Chronicles 21:24

We are prone to forget that real worship involves sacrifi ce. David was not willing to off er to God a site for the new temple which had cost him nothing. Are we giving Him the left overs of our money, our time, our energy, and the residue of our lives? Or does our Lord get the fi rst fruits each day? —David Croudace

Give of your best to the Master; give of the strength of your youth;
Throw your soul’s fresh glowing ardour, into the ba
tt le for truth.
Jesus has set the example; dauntless was He, young and brave;
Give Him your loyal devotion; give Him the best that you have. —H. Grose

Lord’s Day, January 11, 2009

DAILY READINGS: Gen. 15-16; Job 18-19; Matt . 8:28 to 9:17

For which cause He is not ashamed to call them brethren. Heb. 2:11

Many of us have relatives to whom we say “long time, no see” with inner gratitude. Although related we just don’t connect. Imagine then the gulf between us and God. There is a mighty separation between “I know you not” (Matt 25:12), and “these my brethren” (Matt 25:40). How could such a chasm be bridged? Knowing something of the holiness of God and the sinfulness of man, it defi es human reasoning to think that anything or anyone could ever accomplish a reconciliation of the two. Yet there stands the Cross of Christ—the eternal bridge which brings a wretch like me into the warmth of His eternal favour. May our worship please Him today. —Rick Morse

This is the day the Lord hath made; He calls the hours His own;
Let Heaven rejoice, let Earth be glad, And praise surround the throne. —I. W.

DAILY READINGS: Gen. 13-14; Job 16-17; Matt . 8:1-27

Behold, I am pressed under you, as a cart is pressed that is full of sheaves. Amos 2:13

How troublesome is man’s sin to God’s heart? Amos says it is a great burden—like a cart crushed under a full load of grain. Isaiah says that sin wearies God (43:24); Ezekiel says it has broken Him (6:9); and the psalmist writes that sin grieves God (95:10). The wonder of the gospel is that God caused His heart’s joy, His sinless Son, to be sin for us, that we might have our burden of sin removed (2 Cor 5:21). Are you still under the weight of sin? Would you like to be forgiven? Trust Christ who bore the full wrath of your sin. —Warren Henderson

O Christ, what burdens bowed Thy head! Our load was laid on Thee.
Thou stood within the sinner’s stead; to bear all ill for me.—A. Ross Cousins

DAILY READINGS: Gen. 11:27 to 12:20; Job 15; Matt . 7:7-29

Wherein ye greatly rejoice, though now for a season, if need be, ye are in heaviness through manifold temptations. 1 Peter 1:6
As every man hath received the gift , even so minister the same one to another, as good stewards of the manifold grace of God. 1 Peter 4:10

“Manifold grace” for “manifold temptations”—how generous is our Father’s provision! The range of testings and troubles which may come upon us is limitless, but let us be assured that likewise His grace is “variegated”; there is a perfect supply to match the need of the hour. Is it not “suffi cient for thee”? (2 Cor. 12:9) —George Hall

When trouble, like a gloomy cloud, has gathered thick, and thundered loud,
He near my soul has ever stood; His lovingkindness, O how good!—Samuel Medley

DAILY READINGS: Gen. 10 to 11:26; Job 13-14; Matt . 6:19 to 7:6

Nevertheless the centurion believed the master and the owner of the ship more than those things which were spoken by Paul. Acts 27:11

There are times in our Christian life when the Word of God seems to contradict our most logical reasonings. Remember, obedience to the Word in those circumstances will not only bring pleasure to its Author, but will save us from spiritual shipwreck. —Brian Russell

The Bible stands every test we give it,
For its Author is divine;
By grace alone I expect to live it,
And to prove and to make it mine. —H. Lillenas

DAILY READINGS: Gen. 8:20 to 9:29; Job 11-12; Matt . 6:1-18

Moreover as for me, God forbid that I should sin against the LORD in ceasing to pray for you. 1 Samuel 12:23a

Sinning against the Lord for not praying? Would that every parent, every elder, every Sunday school teacher had the same devotion to their prayer life! Samuel said this in light of Israel turning their back on both Samuel and the Lord. Despite that rejection, he would continue to intercede for the wayward nation. May we, like the father of the prodigal son, always keep the souls we have responsibility for, on our hearts and minds in enduring prayer. —Craig Funston

Lord, prepare me to be a sanctuary, pure and holy, tried and true;
With thanksgiving, I’ll be a living sanctuary for You.
—John Thompson and Randy Scruggs
