Meditations on 2 Chronicles
By: H. L. Rossier
The books of the Chronicles were some of the last of the Old Testament books to be written and stand at the end of the Hebrew Old Testament. They are much more than a mere supplement to the books of Samuel and Kings. Rather, they teach us God’s counsels of grace with regard to the kingship of his earthly people and to Judah as the Messiah’s people.
The first nine chapters of II Chronicles show us Solomon on his throne and building the temple. When the kingdom is divided after his death, David’s line ruling over Judah is prominently kept before us. We see all that God’s grace produces in the hearts of even the most wicked kings of this dynasty, while the same grace often silently passes over their faults.
Christ’s earthly kingdom, which is yet to come, a government of wisdom and of peace administered by the King according to God’s counsels, is before us in figure in II Chronicles. Henri Rossier delights to present us with the purposes of God centered in Christ while conducting us through the otherwise often sad history of Solomon and his successors. In this way he helps us to appreciate how this book fits into the overall design of God’s holy word.
