Description
Thomas Clarkson was the son of a clergyman who lived during a time in history where it was legal to own another person. This is called slavery. When he was studying at university he became convinced that slavery was wrong, and that God was calling him to fight against it.
Thomas’ main task was collecting evidence to prove the evils of slavery. He worked night and day, making long, perilous journeys to testify against the horrific treatment of slaves and sailors. Working alongside men like William Wilberforce, Thomas finally saw the slave trade abolished in 1807. Then, in 1833, slavery officially became illegal in the British Isles.
Slavery is still something we face in today’s world. To continue the fight against it, fin out how men like Thomas Clarkson gave their lives to that cause.
