Description
“Do you think God would send me to hell because of the little things I do?” asked a lovely young hospital nurse the other day.
The things referred to wouldn’t be considered “bad” by most people. She, apparently led a blameless life; and she had such a sweet, kindly disposition that you would take her for a real Christian. She was a church member and had been active in Sunday School and Young People’s work; but she had never been “born again” and she knew it. She knew too that the Lord Jesus said, “Ye must be born again” (John 3:7).
After thinking over her question a little I said, “Let’s suppose that a man is brought into the hospital who had taken a deadly poison by mistake. The doctor prepares the antidote which will neutralize the poison, and you take it to the man by doctor’s orders. But he refuses to take it. Although you plead with him to take it, he continues to refuse. Now, if the man dies, who is to blame?”
“Why, the man is,” she replied.
“You’re right, and that is an illustration of how the matter stands between God and you. We have been poisoned by sin. We were born sinners and unless we are “born again” we will die a sinner. Jesus has said that if you die in your sins, you cannot come where He is. And there is no other place for people to go except to hell. But God has prepared a wonderful antidote for sin, and the moment you take it, the poison will be neutralized for all your sins will be put away.”
“What is this antidote?”
“The Lord Jesus Christ is God’s remedy for sin. He left Heaven and came into this world for the purpose of putting away sin by the sacrifice of Himself. Now if you will receive Him as your Saviour, your sins will be blotted out, and God says that they will be remembered no more (Heb. 8:12). But if you refuse to take God’s remedy, you can’t blame Him if you are lost forever. You could not help being born in sin, but when you refuse to take the wonderful remedy that God has provided, then you alone are to blame.”
“Now the little things you do, may not seem very serious in your estimation. But if you’re going to let them keep you from Christ, and thus keep you out of heaven, they look pretty serious to me. Are you going to let them keep you from Christ? Don’t you want Him more than anything else in the world?”
“Yes, I do!” she said softly.
And that’s the point we must reach if we want to be saved. How can we expect God to save us if we care more about the pretty baubles of this world than we do about Him? How foolish people are to let a few trifling things keep them out of heaven! Everybody agrees that Judas Iscariot made a bad bargain when he sold the Lord Jesus for only thirty pieces of silver, but many people today are selling Him for a great deal less than that.
Why did the eternal Son of God come into this world to die for our sins, if He didn’t love us? That is the full proof of His love.
Will you not come to Him, and receive Him as your Saviour and Lord and thus be freed from the fatal consequences of your sins? Or will you refuse God’s remedy for sin and thus plunge yourself into a lost and hopeless eternity! He will save you now. Take the antidote today.
