DAILY READINGS: 1 Kings 10:1-29; Jeremiah 18:1-23; Philippians 3:1-4:1

“Surely we will return with you to your people.” Ruth 1:10, NKJV

Naomi had suffered grievously in the various circumstances of her life. Perhaps this is why she gave poor advice to her daughters-in-law and encouraged them to “return” or “go back” to the darkness of Moab. “Go back” means “return to the place of departure.” Despite her difficulties, she must have previously taught her daughters-in-law about the grace of God in the land of God. Even though she struggled in her counsel to them, there had been a steady testimony before them all along. Are we living so? —N. C. Funston

Be still my soul! The Lord is on thy side;
Bear patiently the cross of grief or pain.
Leave to thy God to order and provide;
In every change He faithful will remain. —Katharina von Schlegel
