DAILY?READINGS: 2 Kings 11-12; Jeremiah 48; Hebrews 12:18 to 13:6

Surely I come quickly. Amen. Even so come, Lord Jesus!  Revelation 22:20

As the storm clouds gather over this poor sinful world, and as the day of vengeance of our God approaches, what a comfort for the believer to recall this promise of the Lord Jesus, that He is coming back again to receive us to Himself. So that where He is, there we may be also. This is indeed a “blessed hope” amid all the hopelessness of the world today. To know that before the storm of judgment bursts on this deserving world, we will be transported to the skies, to meet Him in the air, and so shall we be, forever with the Lord. We echo the longing of the apostle John when he wrote—”Even so, come, Lord Jesus.” —W. H. Burnett

O child of God, thy lot may be oft mixed with trial, grief and pain;
Look up, He’ll surely come for Thee: He says, “I’ll quickly come again.”

DAILY?READINGS: 2 Kings 10; Jeremiah 45-47; Hebrews 12:1-17

And God hath set some in the church, first apostles, secondarily prophets, thirdly teachers, after that miracles, then gifts of healings, helps, governments.  1 Corinthians 12:28

The word “governments” comes from a word that means “to steer; a helmsman”. This pictures what spiritual leaders do in the local church. They are to keep the ship in the channel, away from dangers. The Lord has appointed and gifted those who can do this. An assembly without “government” is like a ship without a helmsman. We should pray for those who guide the saints and allow them to steer us as guided by the Lord. And those who govern need to study the charts (the Word) and keep a sharp eye for dangers. —Carl Knott

Jesus, Saviour, pilot me, over life’s tempestuous sea,
Chart and compass come from Thee: Jesus, Saviour, pilot me.

DAILY?READINGS: 2 Kings 9; Jeremiah 44; Hebrews 11:17-40

…that in all things he might have the preeminence.  Colossians 1:18

Paul has been relating the greatness of Christ. He is the Creator and Sustainer of the universe. He is the Head of the Church, her absolute Sovereign. In every area the Father wants the Son to have the first place. This is the exalted position God has given Him. How about you? Are you giving Him that first place in your life? Such submission gives one true joy and liberty in daily living. —Donald L. Norbie

He is Lord! He is Lord!
He is risen from the dead and He is Lord.
Every knee shall bow, every tongue confess,
That Jesus Christ is Lord!

our_fathers_told_B-1786Our Fathers Have Told Us (September 2015) – Biography

By: S. Beck

Our Fathers Have Told Us focuses on the lives of two gospel pioneers, Mr. and Mrs. L. K. McIlwaine, who displayed, in over fifty years of labour in Nova Scotia, their love to sinners and to their Lord. There were many tears and suffering, hardship and trials, all of which were counted as nought in their consuming zeal to see souls saved. An imperative command drove the stalwart pioneers on, even at the cost of self-abnegation: sinners must hear the gospel of salvation through Christ Jesus the Lord.

Mr. and Mrs. McIlwaine lived a life of single purpose. With sincerity and humility, they simply trusted God and sought to introduce Him to others. The great, reverential fear they held of God implied little fear of man; fiath in a faithful God implied lack of dependence upon others. Consequently, they lived life to the full, in joyful abandonment to the will of God. They felt the dearness of fellowship with Him, the contentment of being in His will, the thrill of seeing His hand, the blessing of feeling His presence. Caring not for the temporal things of earth, seeking to lose their life in the work of the gospel, they found the life that is worth living. In addition to carrying out a contented and purposeful existence on earth, they stored up eternal treasure to be enjoyed throughout eternity.

Praise_Songs_B-5532Praise Songs of Israel (September 2015) – Devotional

By: Albert E. Horton

“O Lord, our Lord, how excellent is thy name in all the earth” Psalm 8:1a

The Psalms are actually poems, written by Hebrew poets many generations ago. There is a great deal of poetry in the Old Testament.

As we study such Psalms we gain some idea of the greatness and glory of our God. May the study of the Psalms help us as we go on meditating on these wonderful “Praise Songs!” May the Lord enable us all to be for His praise and for His pleasure! What a privilege is ours—to be enabled by Him to give Him pleasure! No creature of His could be given greater privilege!

DAILY?READINGS: 2 Kings 8; Jeremiah 42:7 to 43:13; Hebrews 11:1-16

And the children of Israel went into the midst of the sea upon the dry ground…  Exodus 14:22

The Israelites weren’t spared the pursuit of the Egyptians—nor the dilemma of an impassible sea. To the brink of impossibility God led His people—not to destroy them, but to preserve them. As they walked through—God defeated their enemy and secured their salvation. Are you boxed in on all sides today? Are you seeing the impossible wherever you turn? Remember the God of the miraculous! The battle behind you and the sea before you are nothing for Him who commands armies and seas. He’s promised to make a way through for those who trust in Him. Trust Him today! —Deborah Manera

I’ll trust the Lord with all my heart, His promises are sure;
His grace divine, His tenderness, will evermore endure.

DAILY?READINGS: 2 Kings 6:24 to 7:20; Jer. 41 to 42:6; Heb. 10:19-39

Until I went into the sanctuary of God; then understood I their end.  Psalm 73:17

Until! Asaph was puzzled about the ease and prosperity of the wicked. It nearly caused him to stumble as he tried to reason it out. He was looking for answers, but not in the right place. It wasn’t until he went into the sanctuary of God that he understood. We, too, exhaust our resources until we come up with more questions than answers. Why do we wait until then? Prayer should be our first response, not a last resort. Don’t wait until. —Rex Trogdon

Oh what peace we often forfeit,
Oh what needless pain we bear,
All because we do not carry,
Everything to God in prayer.

DAILY?READINGS: 2 Kings 6:1-23; Jeremiah 39-40; Hebrews 10:1-18

Every good gift and perfect gift is from above…  James 1:17

A young man’s testimony told of using his first drugs at age 11.  Drugs became a habit and led him to become a dealer. Before long, the law charged him with several felonies and he was incarcerated. Alone in his cell, he reflected on his failed marriage and loss of contact with his children. When a weekly Bible class was offered, he attended. The message of God’s love and forgiveness gripped him and he embraced Christ as his Saviour. He joyfully spoke of God’s many gifts to him.  Now he serves the Lord in the New Life program at a rescue mission. Psalm 100:4 exhorts us to “be thankful unto him, and bless his name.” May we daily do so. —E. Dyck

Since Jesus came into my heart, floods of joy o’er my soul,
Like the sea billows roll, since Jesus came into my heart.

DAILY?READINGS: 2 Kings 5; Jeremiah 38; Hebrews 9:15-28

…as thy days, so shall thy strength be.  Deuteronomy 33:25

“Too many birthdays” is an explanation often used by elderly friends to account for their diminishing vigour. When encroaching years bring their problems, let us remember to look back thankfully, and to look forward trustingly. Memories of past blessings, and assurances of future glories will supply strength for today. —George Hall

I will never thee forsake!

DAILY?READINGS: 2 Kings 4; Jeremiah 37; Hebrews 9:1-14

Who was delivered for our offences, and was raised again for our justification.  Romans 4:25

What a sight! What a location! Our small group sat around a table on which there rested a loaf of bread and a goblet of wine. To our right was Calvary’s hill on which three crosses once stood. On the middle cross our Saviour had hung, delivering us from our offences. To our left there was an open, empty tomb. Pilate sealed it, but three days later our Saviour delivered Himself for our justification. As we ate the bread and drank the wine, we collectively declared the Lord’s death, until He comes. Just as He kept His promise to deliver us from our offences so He will keep His promise to return for us. —Arnot P. McIntee

Lord Jesus, my Saviour, I’ll still sing of Thee,
Yes, sing of thy precious blood poured out for me.

DAILY?READINGS: 2 Kings 3; Jeremiah 36; Hebrews 8

The heavens are thine, the earth also is thine: as for the world and the fulness thereof, thou hast founded them.  Psalm 89:11

With present day technology astronomers have revealed to man a little of the awesome vastness of God’s universe. The stars and galaxies are beyond our comprehension and are so much greater than our little world. Yet, the Lord God, Creator of all, declares that His delights are with the sons of men. —E. MacLelland

It is a thing most wonderful,
Almost too wonderful to be;
That God’s own Son should come from heav’n;
And die to save a child like me.
—W. W. How
