“Come now, and let us reason together,” Says the Lord, “Though your sins are like scarlet, They shall be as white as snow; Though they are red like crimson, They shall be as wool…” Isaiah 1:18, NKJV

Scarlet is a fixed and permanent colour. It is actually the biblical colour for sin, not black. There is no power in chemistry that can take out the scarlet colour without destroying the fabric. However, what is impossible in chemistry is possible in grace. Our Saviour’s work at Calvary can remove sins of deepest dye. As a lost sinner, have you responded to the Lord’s invitation to “Come now”—not tomorrow, next week, or next month, but today? —W. This is an invitation first of all to the sinner who is burdened and distressed by the guilt and tragedy of his sin. To such the Saviour holds out His hands in welcome, offering forgiveness. But you must come repentant and trusting, believing that His death on the cross is sufficient to pay for your sins. Come and know the rest of His love and forgiveness. But it is also an invitation to the Christian who is burdened with the cares and anxieties of this life. Cast your anxieties upon Him and know the rest of His love and care. Riding home on his bicycle, a young lad suddenly saw a black mamba on the path. Terrified he fell off right on top of the reptile, which promptly sank its fangs into his leg. Far from medical help he died two hours later. Thankfully I had had the privilege of explaining the Gospel to the young man that very morning—how that Christ had died for his sins, and wanted him to trust Him for forgiveness. Whether Kayombo was saved I never knew, but you my friend would do well to prepare to meet your Maker, for there is only a step between us and death. But also only a step between you and God! —David Croudace

This verse names four colours, three of which (scarlet, red and crimson) describe our sin-stained condition in God’s sight. The good news, however, is that cleansing is available through the sin-atoning death of the Lord Jesus Christ. If you wish to be “as white as snow,” put your undivided trust in Him! —George Hall

A friend once said to me, “I’ve committed too many sins, God would never forgive me.” Do you feel this way? The Bible records that God forgave Saul, an accomplice to murder; Zacchaeus, an unscrupulous tax collector and a woman who committed adultery. If you agree with God that you are a sinner and repent of your sins and place your faith in your sinbearer, the Lord Jesus Christ, He will forgive you of all your sins. Moses said to Pharaoh, “Be pleased to command me when I am to plead for you…that the frogs be cut off from you and your houses…And he said, “Tomorrow.” Exodus 8:9-10a 

Pharaoh is the epitome of a heart so hard that when God sent the plague of frogs into Egypt, even into Pharaoh’s bed, he was not rational. When offered the privilege to say when the frogs should depart he replied, “Tomorrow.” Can you imagine?! It is the same for unbelievers who put off receiving God’s free gift of eternal life till tomorrow. The danger is that no one has the promise of tomorrow. Tomorrow is the day to start a diet, not to determine your destiny. Today is the day of Salvation! —Rex Trogdon

For thus said the Lord God…“In returning and rest you shall be saved; in quietness and in trust shall be your strength.” But you were unwilling, Isaiah 30:15 

And the effect of righteousness will be peace, and the result of righteousness, quietness and trust forever. Isaiah 32:17

The world cannot offer quietness or assurance. Those without Christ run frantically to and fro seeking both because they refuse to accept these gifts from the Saviour. Only where righteousness prevails will quietness and peace be found. If you’re still looking, the key is, “In returning and rest you shall be saved.” Come to Christ and trust Him today! —W. H. God’s judgment is coming. Some may scoff at such a thought. Others are indifferent and live only for the moment. All the while God’s longsuffering continues. Why? Because He is waiting for as many as possible to turn to Him and to repent of their sins. He is waiting for you. But one day, and it could be soon, the door will close. Have you trusted Him? He’s waiting for you, but not for much longer! —L. Richard

This chapter starts with a dark description of the lost estate of each one who is outside of Christ. But it ends with God indwelling each one who trusts Christ as Saviour. From start to finish, God’s mercy and love shine forth. Because of His great love toward us, He has saved us. Love is the basis and motivation for everything He has given to us and made us. Thank God for His infinite and unconditional love. —B. Crawford
