DAILY READINGS: 1 Kings 9:1-28; Jeremiah 17:1-27; Philippians 2:12-30

By faith Abel offered to God a more excellent sacrifice than Cain. Hebrews 11:4, NKJV

In order to approach God, Cain brought the fruit of his labour to try to cover his sin! He was rejected. None of our good works, even the best, can ever be good enough for God. He is utterly holy. Because of this the Bible says the soul that sins must die. My sin can be paid for only by death. So by faith Abel offered a lamb, which died in his place and his sacrifice was accepted. The Lamb of God, the Lord Jesus Christ, died as our substitute, and for our sin. Depending upon that sacrifice, we can now come to God by faith and find forgiveness and full acceptance. Have you come? —David Croudace

Redeeming the time, because the days are evil. Ephesians 5:16, KJV

Its estimated that during the average lifetime we will spend about six months waiting at stoplights and two years standing in line. These statistics may be exaggerated, but time is extremely important. In view of the evil days in which we live, we are exhorted to redeem it, that is, to buy up our opportunities to worship, walk and witness. Time is short for all of us, but especially for the individual who has not yet believed on Jesus Christ. If you haven’t done so, while there is yet time, believe now on the Lord Jesus Christ. —W. Normally, when appeals for clemency arrived on the desk of President Abraham Lincoln, they were supported by letters from influential people. When one came without the usual documentation, the president exclaimed, “What, has this man no friends?” “No,” replied one of his advisors. “Then,” said Lincoln, “I will be his friend.” When no man cared for our souls, the Lord Jesus died for us. And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judgment. Hebrews 9:27

The judgment is just as certain as death. Some people in terrible pain, or facing penalties, choose to commit suicide. They seem to think that it will end all. In fact, for those not born again, it is the beginning of far greater agony, with no escape, no end. God offers eternal life as a gift, but this offer terminates at death. Why leave it to the last minute? Come to Jesus, here and now. You will never regret it. —R. E. Harlow

And the heavens over your head shall be bronze. Deut. 28:23 

So is the experience for the natural man who seeks God, but not the Christ of God. Many try to come to God, praying incessantly, yet finding the heavens as bronze. Bronze speaks of God’s judgment and it certainly is God’s judgment that separates us from Him. What we need to realize is that although we cannot do it ourselves, Someone has already gone through judgment (brass) to dissolve it for us. The only way to God is by Christ. —Tom Steere

In recent years the world has lurched from one state of turmoil to another. The term 9/11 will be forever etched in the annals of history. The downward spiral has continued since then. The crash of the world’s financial system. Continued terrorism and war. The doom and gloom warnings of global warming. But our Lord Jesus Christ is still able to calm troubled hearts. The dying thief on the cross is a beautiful testimony to the truth of this scripture. Salvation is by faith and by faith alone! The contrite heart of this sinner repented and said, “this Man has done nothing wrong,” thus confessing that Jesus was the Christ, the Son of God. He then earnestly prayed, “Lord, remember me when You come into Your kingdom.” Assured by the word of the Lord, “today you will be with Me in Paradise” (Luke 23:41-43, NKJV), he died forgiven (not by his works but by the Lord’s blessed work) and went to heaven. —E. Going door to door in evangelism, some men came upon a man working on a car. They invited him to a meeting, and he said, “I’m not religious and I don’t have time.” They asked him: “If you don’t take care of your car, what will happen?” “It will break down and I’ll lose it.” The question came, “And your soul? If you don’t take care of your soul, the same thing will happen.” Many people care for their face, their hair, their body, their car, their finances, but neglect their soul, and the loss is irreparable. Friend, neglect your soul no longer. We pulled up to the stop sign, aware of the police car waiting some 20 feet away. Cross traffic prevented us from
starting again for a full minute. If later that day I had rolled through that same stop sign, the policeman would not have
been impressed with the argument that the prolonged stop earlier would more than compensate for the current failure
to comply. Likewise a lifetime of good works cannot negate even a single sin in the eyes of God, the righteous Judge. His standards are not relative but absolute. But by grace He offers to save you. Have you come? —David J. Logan
