Robert Haldane (1764-1842) studied at Edinburgh University and was converted after brief careers in the British navy and as a successful landscape gardener. In 1795 he sold his estate in order to fund mission work in India. Due to opposition from the East India Company, this project was abandoned, and the funds were used for establishing preaching stations and theological seminaries in Scotland. Haldane spent three years teaching in Geneva where he influenced numerous leaders in the French and Swiss church. His lectures to students on the epistle to the Romans were later published as the present Commentary on Romans. His other works included Evidences and Authority of Divine Revelation.
