Through the variety of media available to us today, we are able to listen to many different subjects: news, sports, opinion etc. Unfortunately, these things can sometimes take our minds to places which may not be helpful. But with the help of the Holy Spirit, we can control our thoughts, “bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ” (2 Cor. 10:5b). Often the Lord keeps His voice still and small so that we must practice listening carefully.

One day, when I was a small boy, a supply teacher came to our school. I clearly recall him making the statement; “Heaven is closer than your own breath!”. Paul, preaching on Mars Hill, made a similar statement: “He is not far from each one of us; for in Him we live and move and have our being” (vv. 27-28 NKJV). All we do is with breath and life from God. The evidence of Him is all around us! Man walks in great light, but stumbles and falls in darkness because he is blind. This is the morning of mornings! The tomb is empty, telling us the enemy has been vanquished. We have the hope of all hopes because the risen Saviour is the firstfruits of those who have gone before us! Because of the triumph of His resurrection, we will all meet again. Soon, very soon, He will break through the heavens with a glorious shout, and we shall all meet Him in the air (1 Thess. 4:16–18)! On this resurrection morning let us shout from our hearts, “I know that my Redeemer lives” (Job 19:25 NKJV). —Jim Comte

Many believers are in very difficult circumstances. Whether it is persecution, a health crisis or broken relationships, life is hard for them. Feelings of anger and resentment against the Lord can creep into people’s hearts when they don’t understand His plan and purposes. Perhaps the difficult things the Lord has allowed into your life have a great purpose yet to be revealed. Bring your anger to the Lord! He may not remove the difficulties, but He has promised to give grace to help in time of need. —Sid Halsband

Jesus knew of the coming emotional turmoil of betrayal by a friend (18:5), the condemnation of the religious leaders (18:14) and the denial of a dear disciple (18:25). He knew of the physical pain of scourging (19:1), beating (19:3) and crucifixion (19:16) that He would endure. He also knew of the impending spiritual suffering in being forsaken by God (Matt. 27:46). Jesus knowing all things went forward. Worship Him today! —K.J.W.

“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path” (Ps. 119:105). The most read book in the world is the Bible. In the last 50 years it has outsold any other book: 3.9 billion copies. God’s Word has power and strength. It is profitable and useful in every aspect of life. It is practical in real circumstances, giving us direction in day-to-day life (our feet) and for the future (our path). Let us not just buy a Bible, but appreciate it, appropriate its truth and apply

Harold Copping painted an iconic work entitled “Hope of the World” in 1914. Among other things, he travelled to the land of Israel to study the countryside, its towns and people, and produced “The Copping Bible” which was an illustrated Bible. It included a painting of the Lord surrounded by children of different colour and gender. How vital in our age of focus on inclusivity and diversity that we emphasize the universal invitation of the Gospel—for young and old: north and south, east and west. —Brian Powlesland

It was an ordinary day with its ordinary tasks. Saul, “a choice young man”, was directed by his father to find lost donkeys. On that ordinary day God was to redirect his life. Saul returned home anointed king “to save Israel”. Today may begin as an ordinary day, but it can be a day in which God will bless you, direct you and use you for His glory. —Arnot P. McIntee
