DAILY READINGS: Joshua 3; Hosea 11:12 to 14:9; Luke 20:20 to 21:4

The elders of Israel said, Wherefore hath the LORD smitten us today before the Philistines? Let us fetch the ark of the covenant of the LORD out of Shiloh unto us, that, when it cometh among us, it may save us out of the hand of our enemies. 1 Samuel 4:3b

Routed by their enemies, Israel discerned that their defeat was ordained by the Lord. Instead of examining themselves to see where they had sinned, they tried to manipulate God into helping them by bringing the Ark to the army. Although it was the Almighty’s symbolic throne in that day, this box could never save them. Neither will man’s programs or methods deliver the Church from its problems. We must repent and trust in the Lord alone. The answer lies in a personal God, never in an “it”. —K. R. Keyser

The Lord alone defends His own, when earth or hell oppresses;
Omnipotent Redeemer, our ransomed souls adore Thee. —C. Wesley

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 2; Hosea 10 to 11:11; Luke 20:1-19

If thou count me therefore a partner, receive him as myself. Philemon 1:17

Christian partnership is a divinely provided fellowship which needs careful and prayerful nurturing. The Church works together with different backgrounds; ethnic, social, male and female. We have different spiritual gifts and natural talents; some public, some private, but all needed and important. We have different duties; communicating truth, encouraging and comforting one another but all praying for each other. Our goals are simple; to glorify God in our hearts and lives; minister to the needs of the family of Christ and serve a loving Master. —Milton Haack

It pays to serve Jesus, it pays every day;
Though the pathway to glory may sometimes be drear,
You’ll be happy each step of the way. —Frank Huston

DAILY READINGS: Joshua 1; Hosea 8-9; Luke 19:29-48

And the men of Israel answered the men of Judah, and said, We have ten parts in the king, and we have also more right in David than ye: why then did ye despise us, that our advice should not be first had in bringing back our king? And the words of the men of Judah were fiercer than the words of the men of Israel. 2 Sam. 19:43

David had been restored to his position as king, and representatives of both Judah and Israel had been involved. Sadly, however, there was dissension about who had been responsible for the homecoming. It is amazing how we, as believers, can find time to take offense and argue over issues that have gone well. Good events can turn into sad ones if we let the flesh take over with its envy and jealousy. —Brian Russell

Give me a calm, a thankful heart from every murmur free;
And blessings of Thy grace impart and let me live to Thee. —Anne Steele

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 34; Hosea 6:4 to 7:16; Luke 19:1-28

Thou shalt also make a laver of brass, and his foot also of brass, to wash withal: and thou shalt put it between the tabernacle of the congregation and the altar, and thou shalt put water therein. Exodus 30:18

When approaching God in the tabernacle of old, the first two articles one met in the courtyard were the altar and laver. First was the altar of sacrifice where the blood was shed, then the laver to wash the hands and feet. Today we approach God in the same manner: by the blood of Christ to atone for our sin, and by the washing of water by the word of God to continually remove the contamination of that sin.—Tom Steere

"My blood I thus pour forth,” He cries, to cleanse the soul in sin that lies;
In this the covenant is sealed, and heaven's eternal grace revealed.—John Morrison

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 33; Hosea 4 to 6:3; Luke 18:15-43

Call unto me, and I will answer thee, and shew thee great and mighty things, which thou knowest not. Jeremiah 33:3

Do you have a burden today? Take it to the Lord. Call on Him. He has promised to answer. Savour the prospect of His response. He usually answers when we least expect, and usually in a fashion we did not imagine—mighty ways that we cannot prescribe. Call on Him, and leave the burden there. Too often we neither leave the burden, nor call in honest faith; and that is the reason we too often see no answer.—Doug Kazen

Deep in unfathomable mines of never failing skill,
He treasures up His bright designs and works His sovereign will.—William Cowper

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 32:15-52; Hosea 2 to 3 ; Luke 17:20 to 18:14

Wherefore remember, that ye in time past…were without Christ, being aliens from the commonwealth of Israel, and strangers from the covenants of promise, having no hope, and without God in the world. But now in Christ Jesus ye who sometimes were far off are made nigh by the blood of Christ. Ephesians 2:11-13

The phrase “in times past” draws attention to what we were in unsaved days: Christless, Godless, hopeless, and afar off. Those were dark days indeed. Then we have, “But now”. What a change has been wrought in us and for us. We have been brought near, reconciled, become possessors of peace and sharers in a glorious and blessed hope. We remember what we once were and will forever be grateful for what we now are. —Roy Hill

Redeemed and with the price of blood, which thou hast shed for me
I stand, a monument of grace, a witness, Lord, for Thee.—Fanny Crosby

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 31:14 to 32:14; Hosea 1; Luke 17:1-19

To the law and to the testimony: if they speak not according to this word, it is because there is no light in them. Isaiah 8:20

Since there is so much error, false teaching, and misunderstanding of the Scripture in our culture, we must be like the Bereans who “searched the Scriptures daily, whether these things were so,” (Acts 17:11). Much of this error is seen in the broadcast and print media so we must carefully instruct our young people and new believers since they would be more easily swayed due to lack of Bible knowledge. Man likes to contribute something to the work of God so he can say he earned his way. Careful study of the Word will tell us the work is done!—W. H. Gustafson

Thy work alone, O Christ, can ease this weight of sin;
Thy blood alone, O Lamb of God, can give me peace within. —H. Bonar

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 30 to 31:13; Amos 9; Luke 16

And He said unto them, Why are ye troubled and why do thoughts arise in your hearts? Luke 24:38

The excitement of the last few minutes had suddenly vanished, and once smiling faces were now fearful and terrified. Without opening the door, the Saviour suddenly appeared offering peace to His shocked disciples, who supposed they had seen a spirit. However, when He asked for food and ate it in their presence, they were confident He was the risen Lord, the Man, Christ Jesus. Jesus is alive today at the Father’s own right hand. Believe it with all your heart, and enjoy the peace He gave to them and now offers you and me.—Arnot P. McIntee

Peace, perfect peace, our future all unknown?
Jesus we know, and He is on the throne.—E. Bickersteth

DAILY READINGS: Deut. 29; Amos 7-8; Luke 15:11-32

And Ahab the son of Omri did evil in the sight of the LORD above all that were before him. And it came to pass…that he took to wife Jezebel the daughter of Ethbaal king of the Zidonians, and went and served Baal, and worshipped him. 1 Kings 16:30, 31b

The person we marry will impact greatly on our life. So many Christians have married a non-Christian and today are far from God. Are you a Christian and thinking of marrying someone who doesn’t love the Lord? Don’t! How much better to marry someone who loves God and will encourage you in your walk with Him. —Janet Fleming

Thank God for homes where He’s welcome, to dwell with the family there,
Where children are pointed to Jesus and committed to His tender care.—J. F.
