Molded by the Cross: The Biography of Jessie Penn-Lewis
By: J. C. Metcalfe
Jessi Penn-Lewis was born in Neath, South Wales, in 186. One of a large family, she was brought up, to quote her words, “in religious surroundings and in the lap of Calvinistic Methodism.” She was a clever young child but physically weak: There was certainly no early indication that God was to grant her such a special enduement of power to serve Him that more than half a century after she died many thousands of her books would be sold each year; that despite constant poor health she would minister in far-off cities in Russia, before the Revolution: that as a lay person( and a woman at that!) she would minister at famous conferences, churches and conventions that had hitherto been the exclusive preserve of the eminent evangelical ministers of the day.
The main aim of this spiritual biography is to give her modern-day readers, who know little about her modern-day readers, who know little about little about her, a picture of the way God dealt with and poured life through His servant-life which still flows today. In the original memoir of her life, the following quotation appeared on the title page: “He that believed into Me, out of the depths of his life shall pour torrents of living water. This spake He out of the Spirit..”(John 7:38-39, Old Syriac Version). This is what God has done through Jessie Penn-Lewis; and longs to do for you and me.
