That I gave my brother Hanani, and Hananiah the ruler of the palace, charge over Jerusalem: for he was a faithful man, and feared God above many. Nehemiah 7:2
Owing to his trustworthiness and reverence for God, Hanani became the equivalent of Jerusalem’s mayor. Faithfulness is an essential quality in God’s service. Whether the task is menial or grand, we are expected to perform it completely and consistently. The Lord promised that loyal service in little things will result in greater responsibility in the coming age (Luke 19:17). Whether it is at our work, in the home, or in the church, saints should persevere, heeding God’s assessment instead of human opinion. —K. R. Keyser
