Judges 8:1-35; Isaiah 29:1-24; 1 Corinthians 8:1-13

Be of good courage, and let us play the men for our people, and for the cities of our God: and the Lord do that which seemeth him good. 2 Samuel 10:12

Despite his checkered political and military career, Joab knew how to give a rousing pre-battle speech. He exhorted his brother and himself to “play the men”—a wonderful expression for exhibiting manly courage. Modern culture denigrates manhood, and seeks to subvert gender roles and attack divinely instituted authority structures like marriage and the family. Today believing males must assert their godly manhood in showing spiritual leadership in both the home and the church. —K. R. Keyser
