Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. John 15:13

The headline read “Mom’s final act saves baby.” The heroic mother was pushing her baby’s stroller across an intersection when a car made an illegal turn. She pushed the buggy out of the way, but could not avoid the vehicle and was killed. The greatest act of love was at Calvary where the Lord Jesus died in your place and mine, paying the price of our sins. The apostle Paul said, “the Son of God, who loved me and gave himself for me” (Galatians. 2:20). —Arnot P. McIntee

Jesus has saved me—wonderful Saviour! Jesus has saved me—
I cannot tell how; But this I do know, He came, my ransom,
Dying on Calvary with thorns on His brow. —J. W. MacGill

Numbers 10:11-11:3; Proverbs 8:1-36; Jude

Blessed be the Lord God, the God of Israel, who only doeth wondrous things. And blessed be his glorious name for ever: and let the whole earth be filled with his glory; Amen, and Amen. Psalm 72:18-19

He only does wondrous things! As we contemplate the things that God has done for us, our hearts should be filled with praise and gratitude. We cannot praise Him too much or give Him too much glory. Everything that God does is perfection, and when He rules on earth, all will be at peace. How we long for that day! —Gwenyth Frear

As long as sun and moon endure,
May people know, Your peace so pure.
Blessed be the God of heaven,
And His wondrous name for e’er, Amen! —G.F.

Thomas said to him, “Lord, we do not know where you are going. How can we know the way?” John 14:5

Thomas asks a vital question concerning our direction and destiny. There are two ways into eternity, the narrow way that leads to life, and the broad way that leads to destruction (Matthew 7). Be not deceived for there is “a way that seems right to a man, but its end is the way to death” (Proverbs 16:25). Reformation, religion, good works, and sincerity are some ways that seem right, but are false. There is only one way. Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” (John 14:6). “And there is salvation in no one else” (Acts 4:12). Have you come to Him? —R. Surgenor

And God gave Solomon wisdom and understanding. 1 Kings 4:29

The widely watched funeral service of Queen Elizabeth II heard tributes from many leaders. One tribute came from the leader of the Church of Scotland who said in his homily, “Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth began her reign, like King Solomon, by asking for wisdom, something that she demonstrated in large measure”. The king of Tyre said, “Blessed be the Lord God of Israel…who [gave] to David the king a wise son, endued with prudence and understanding” (2 Chron. 2:12). To be wise is to be prudent and demonstrate understanding , characteristics to be admired and sought after.—Brian Powlesland

We have no wealth or learning; what shall we children bring?
We’ll bring Him hearts that love Him; we’ll bring Him thankful praise,
And young souls meekly striving, to walk in holy ways:
And these shall be our treasures, we offer to the King. —Unknown

I have come that they may have life, and that they may have it more abundantly. John 10:10, NKJV

The Lord Jesus loved to talk about life. In this passage He speaks of the enemies of the sheep—the thief who comes to steal and to kill and to destroy. The wolf has a similar ambition and the hireling is no better. So different is the motive of the Lord the Shepherd. He comes to give His life and, by so doing, He is able to impart life more abundant to those who put their confidence and trust in Him. He said, “I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd gives His life for the sheep,” (John 10:11, NKJV). Have you received life from Him? —R. J.

The least, the feeblest of the sheep, to him the Father gave, Kind is His
heart the charge to keep, and strong His arm to save. —P. Doddridge

Lord’s Day, April 28, 2024

Numbers 8:1-26; Proverbs 5:1-6:19; Mark 15:24-47

And now, saith the Lord that formed me from the womb to be his servant, to bring Jacob again to him, Though Israel be not gathered, yet shall I be glorious in the eyes of the Lord, and my God shall be my strength. Isaiah 49:5

How could the Lord Jesus die to save a world that rejects Him? How could He suffer His own people’s repudiation without despairing? The Father’s unwavering approval of His beloved Son and the prophecy of His future restoration of the Israelite remnant strengthened Christ for obedience to the point of death on the cross (Matt. 3:17; Phil. 2:8). Truly, He shall everlastingly “be glorious in the eyes of the Lord”. —Keith R. Keyser

Was the only end and motive, to resign His gracious breath.  —William Williams

Numbers 7:1-89; Proverbs 4:1-27; Mark 15:1-23

[I] cease not to give thanks for you, making mention of you in my prayers. Ephesians 1:16

The Apostle Paul was very much a man of prayer. His work was anchored in a prayerful attitude of communion with the Lord. As we study his prayers and others in the Scriptures we find the focus is spiritual rather than material. Rarely are there requests for health,  wealth or even physical freedom and the words “Be with” are never used, as we so often do today. Jesus has promised to be with His people (Matt. 28:20) and so it seems a bit superfluous to ask the Lord to do what He has already promised to do. As someone has written, “All that matters may be brought before God, but we must always bring before God those things that matter most”. —Paul Young

Take time to be holy, speak oft with Thy Lord;
Abide in Him always, and feed on His Word. —William D. Longstaff

And also say, “Behold, your servant Jacob is behind us.” For he said, “I will appease him with the present that goes before me, and afterward I will see his face; perhaps he will accept me.” Genesis 32:20, NKJV

Jacob feared death at the hand of his brother and so he tried to appease his brother’s anger with gifts. We face the wrath of God and eternal death (Romans 6:23). God is not appeased by our gifts or good works. It is “not by works of righteousness which we have done, but according to His mercy He saved us” (Titus 3:5, NKJV). Which method are you counting on—your gifts and works or His gift to you? —P. W.

Thy work alone, my Saviour, can ease this weight of sin; Thy blood
alone, O Lamb of God, can give me peace within. —Horatius Bonar

How beautiful are the feet of them that preach the gospel of peace, and bring glad tidings of good things! Romans 10:15

I have a 100-year-old friend who faithfully gives Gospel tracts to people every day. According to God’s Word, he has beautiful feet. I long to have beautiful feet too. Do you? God gives us opportunities to share the Good News about His gift of salvation with people every day. I have often wondered where I would be if nobody had ever shared the truth with me. —Pam Hagey

Oh the deep, deep love of Jesus—spread His praise from shore to shore;
How He loveth, ever loveth, changeth never, nevermore;
How He watches o’er His loved ones, died to call them all His own;
How for them He intercedeth, watcheth o’er them from the throne.  —S. Trevor Francis

Now the law came in to increase the trespass, but where sin increased, grace abounded all the more. Romans 5:20

Even our righteous acts are like filthy rags in the eyes of God (Isaiah 64:6). Yet, no matter how sin has revealed itself in us, there is good news—the Gospel of the grace of God. On the cross the Lord Jesus paid the price for all our sins and whether great or few, God’s grace abounds more. Friend, you may have done great harm to yourself and others. Don’t despair. Trust Christ as your Saviour today and He will immediately forgive, change and welcome you as His own. —George Ferrier
