DAILY?READINGS: 1 Kings 7; Jeremiah 14; Ephesians 6:10-24

I will remember the works of the Lord: surely I will remember thy wonders of old.  Psalms 77:11

How wonderful a gift is our memory, particularly when we centre it on the Lord of all creation and redemption. As we consider all His marvelous works, it seems we eventually arrive at Calvary, God’s wonder of wonders. With the emblems of bread and wine our hearts are carried back over the centuries. Looking at the bread we think of His body which was given. In viewing the cup, we remember His precious blood that was shed. May we be caught up in wonder as we remember Him today.  —Harold G. Smith

To Calvary, Lord, in spirit now,
Our weary souls repair,
To dwell upon Thy dying love,
And taste its sweetness there.—E. Denny

DAILY?READINGS: 1 Kings 6; Jeremiah 13; Ephesians 5:22 to 6:9

Heirs of God, and joint heirs with Christ.  Romans 8:17

What a wonder! That undeserving sinners with no prior claim on God’s grace, should by faith, be able to enter into such a full inheritance. It is all centred in the person of the Son of God. All glory be to His name! Tomorrow is Sunday. We live such busy and distracted lives. Today, why not set aside some of those intrusive things that so fill our time and prepare for the Lord’s day by meditating on what our Saviour has done for us! —Mark Fenn

Yet it must be: Thy love had not its rest,
Were Thy redeemed not with Thee fully blest.
That love that gives not as the world, but shares;
All it possesses with its loved co-heirs.

DAILY?READINGS: 1 Kings 4-5; Jeremiah 12; Ephesians 5:1-21

We remember…Egypt…the onions, and the garlic.  Numbers 11:5
For consider (remember) him that endured such contradiction of sinners against himself, lest ye be wearied and faint in your minds.  Hebrews 12:3

When the Israelites remembered the indulgences of Egypt and forgot all that they had suffered there, they got depressed and wanted to return! We too, can easily become weary and disheartened. But God has given us the antidote here—we need to set aside time to consider and “meditate on” the Lord Jesus and His sufferings. God promises that doing this will be a powerful motivating force in our lives and will keep us from becoming spiritually drained and discouraged. —David Croudace

Give me a sight O Saviour, of Thy wondrous love for me,
Of the love that brought Thee down to earth, to die on Calvary. —A. Kelly

DAILY?READINGS: 1 Kings 3; Jeremiah 11; Ephesians 4:17-32

Those eighteen, upon whom the tower in Siloam fell, and killed them, think ye that they were sinners above all men that dwelt in Jerusalem?  Luke 13:4

To the question of an untimely death being a judgement of God, the Lord Jesus clarifies that misconception by saying “I tell you, Nay: but, except ye repent, ye shall all likewise perish” (Luke 13:3). The truth is that we are all going to perish someday. The time, place and reason are unknown to us. However we do know that if we die without coming to Christ we will indeed perish. Our hearts should be keen to the brevity of life—life that must turn to God in repentance or perish for all eternity. —Tom Steere

O soul! Why shouldst thou wander, from such a loving Friend?
Cling closer, closer to Him, stay with Him to the end.

DAILY?READINGS: 1 Kings 2; Jeremiah 10; Ephesians 4:1-16

Thus saith the Lord, Be not afraid nor dismayed by reason of this great multitude; for the battle is not yours but God’s.   2 Chron. 20:15

So spake the prophet Jahaziel to Jehoshaphat and the people, when they were facing a confederacy of three hostile nations and defeat seemed certain. True to the prophet’s word, these nations were distracted by fighting among themselves and Judah was left unharmed. There are times when we feel that we face impossible situations and it appears that the enemy has the upper hand. Never fear. Our God is the God of the impossible and He is well able to intervene in a mighty way for our deliverance. —W. H. Burnett

Faint not Christian! Though the road, leading to thy blest abode,
Darksome be and dangerous too, Christ,
thy Guide, will bring thee through. —James Harinton Evans

DAILY?READINGS: 1 Kings 1; Jeremiah 9; Ephesians 3

The Lord looked down from heaven upon the children of men, to see if there were any that did understand, and seek God.  Psalm 14:2
Oh that they were wise, that they understood this, that they would consider their latter end.  Deuteronomy 32:29

God’s heart is ever open to human need. He sees the world’s empty striving for mastery and and it grieves Him. We too should sorrow as we look around and see a world that is fast ripening for judgement. Many loved ones are not yet sheltered from the coming wrath and are in need of salvation. Surely this must lead us to intensify our prayers for them. —Drew Craig

Rescue the perishing, duty demands it;
Strength for thy labour the Lord will provide;
Back to the narrow way, patiently win them;
Tell the poor wandr’er a Saviour has died. —Fanny J. Crosby

Excellent Thoughts (A Reprint)

Excellent Thoughts by John F. Grey was first published in India in 1923. Gospel Folio Press is always on the lookout for out-of-print titles that can be reprinted for the benefit of God’s people. We trust Christians will enjoy this one.

John was born again at the age of 18 through evangelistic meetings. In 1946, John traveled to Canada with his wife, being commended to the work of the Lord. He eagerly carried out his ministry until his home call in February 1994.

Excellent Thoughts: From the Word of God for the Last Days

The cross is the only happy meeting place between God and the guilty sinner. It is the balm of all our sin wounds and the cordial which sweetly removes all our fears. At the cross we gaze upon the unspeakable grace of Jesus’ heart, the perfection of His work and the glory of His Person. As our comprehension and appreciation of the work of Christ at the cross grow, we will come to recognize our unforgiveness, ungraciousness, and uncouthness, solemnly confess it to God and put it away.

Join the author in a biblical exploration of the victory won at the cross and its beautiful repercussions for followers of the Lord Jesus Christ in the last days.

DAILY?READINGS: 2 Samuel 24; Jeremiah 8; Ephesians 2:11-22

For whosoever shall do the will of God, the same is my brother, and my sister, and mother.  Mark 3:35

It appears on this occasion that the Lord’s mother and brothers came to where He was preaching. For whatever reason, they did not join those gathered to hear the Lord, but rather sent for Him to come to them. Even His listeners were surprised that He ignored their request. What was the reason? Normally, the Lord would have gladly met with His family, but He was engaged in His Father’s business and could not be disturbed. Instead, He told His audience that those who did His Father’s will were His true brethren. Let us be careful not to let loved ones keep us from doing what God calls us to do. —W. A. H.

How I praise Thee, precious Saviour, that Thy love laid hold of me,
Thou hast saved and cleansed and filled me that I might Thy channel be.

DAILY?READINGS: 2 Kings 8; Jeremiah 42:7 to 43:13; Hebrews 11:1-16

All that generation were gathered unto their fathers: and there arose another generation after them, which knew not the Lord. Judges 2:10
Examine yourselves, whether ye be in the faith.  2 Corinthians 13:5

It is easy for a young person who has had the privilege of growing up in a godly home and a Bible believing assembly to rest on the faith of his/her parents and yet not know the Lord in a personal, life-changing way! Such faith will not stand. Eventually life will force you to stand alone and make your own decision regarding Christ and your relationship to Him. Only Christ Himself can satisfy the deepest longings of the heart. Before you drift away into a world of sin that will never satisfy, turn to Christ. Humbly trust Him as your Saviour and commit your life completely to Him. —David Croudace

Now none but Christ can satisfy, no other name for me,
There’s love, and life, and lasting joy, Lord Jesus found in Thee. —B. E

DAILY?READINGS: 2 Samuel 23; Jeremiah 7; Ephesians 1:15 to 2:10

When I consider the heavens, the work of thy fingers, the moon and the stars, which thou hast ordained; what is man, that thou art mindful of him? and the son of man, that thou hast visited him? Psalm 8:3-4

We can look up to the heavens and see God’s glory in the starry host. We can also look around at nature—the changing seasons and see God’s handiwork revealed in all its beauty and splendour. One thing that surpasses it all is God’s infinite love in sending His Son to become a man and to be our Saviour. May our hearts be filled with Him today. —Jim Paul

There’s a wonder of sunset at evening,
The wonder of sunrise I see;
But the wonder of wonders that fills my soul,
Is the wonder that God loves me. —G. B. Shea
