DAILY READINGS: 2 Samuel 7:1-29; Nahum 2:1-3:19; Romans 14:1-18

A man’s life consisteth not in the abundance of the things which he possesseth. Luke 12:15

Malfulira is a town in Zambia’s copperbelt. Anyone entering into it will read the place name on a sign and a description added to it— “Malfulira—A Place of Abundance.” Across the world there are many who struggle to survive while others have plenty and sometimes too much. The Lord exhorted His hearers not to lay up for themselves treasures on earth but rather in heaven. Christians ought to value what is valuable to God—like “the ornament of a meek and quiet spirit, which is in the sight of God of great price” (1 Pet. 3:4) rather than longing for an abundance of material things. —Brian Powlesland

Unnumbered comforts on my soul, Thy tender care bestowed,
Before my infant heart conceived, from whom these comforts flowed. —Joseph Addison
