Numbers 35:9-36:13; Proverbs 31:1-31; Luke 5:17-39

Make thee an ark of wood. Deuteronomy 10:1

The two replacement tables of stone were preserved in an ark of wood. We know this ark was the ark of the covenant because of the statement “and there they be, as the Lord commanded me” (v. 5). Also, many years later, “There was nothing in the ark save the two tables of stone” (1 Kgs. 8:9). But the ark was made of wood overlaid with gold (Ex. 25:11), so why just mention “an ark of wood”? Wood overlaid with gold depicts our Saviour now glorified, so the omission of gold calls our attention to Him when He was on earth.  Concerning Him, Isaiah wrote “he will magnify the law, and make it honourable” (Isa. 42:21). —Phil Coulson
