“I will lay down my life for Your sake.” Jesus answered him, “Will you lay down your life for My sake?” John 13:37-38 NKJV
How ironic Peter’s bold statement must have sounded to Jesus, who would shortly lay down His life. In John 10:17, Jesus says, “Therefore doth my Father love me, because I lay down my life.” Although well intentioned, Peter could never fully comprehend the future implications of what Jesus was about to do. Caiaphas prophesied that it was necessary that one man (Jesus) die for the people (John 11:51). May we fully appreciate with the enlightened eyes of faith that only the sacrifice of this One—Jesus, could give us life. —E. V.
