Genesis 1:1-2:3; Job 1:1-2:10; Matthew 1:1-24

The beginning of the gospel of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. Mark 1:1

What a perfect focus for a year’s beginning. Mark’s subject is Jesus Christ, the Son of God. As we trace Christ through Mark’s Gospel we say, who else could this Man be, but God’s own Son? Demons tremble. Raging waves still. The dead quicken. Crowds whisper in awe, “He does all things well”. But it is not until His path reaches Calvary that His divine Sonship is finally verbally acknowledged. As the centurion watched Him breathe His last; as he watched Him finish His work, he exclaimed, “Truly this was the Son of God”. The full expression of Christ’s divine Sonship still
shines brightest from Calvary’s gloom. May the year ahead be a journey of enjoying Jesus Christ, the Son of God. —S. McEachern

To Calvary, Lord, in Spirit now, our grateful souls repair,
To dwell upon Thy dying love, and taste its sweetness there. —E. Denny
