DAILY?READINGS: 1 Chronicles 26-27; Ezekiel 23; John 8:31-59

Abide with us: for it is toward evening, and the day is far spent. Luke 24:29

Henry Francis Lyte, ill and weary, sat by the water’s edge one Lord’s Day evening at Brixham on the Devonshire coast and wrote, “Abide with me”. He had just preached for the last time, and now, for him, the day was far spent. The presence of the Lord was all that mattered. Is it not so with ourselves? Time is running out. Whether personally or prophetically, the day is far spent and we need His presence every passing hour. Well might we sing this lovely hymn. —Jim Flanigan

Abide with me, fast falls the eventide;
The darkness deepens, Lord with me abide.
When other helpers fail, and comforts flee,
Help of the helpless, oh, abide with me. —Henry Francis Lyte
